USS Arizona Memorial Stamp Commemeration

The famed Memorial to the USS Arizona will be gracing a new high-denomination U.S. stamp set to be issued March 13 in Honolulu, Hawaii. The U.S. Postal Service is issuing this $19.99 Priority Mail Express stamp during a 10:30 a.m. first-day ceremony at the National Park Service’s Pearl Harbor Visitors Center, 1 Arizona Memorial Place, Honolulu, Hawaii.

This new stamp will fulfill the new postage rate that went into effect on Jan. 26, 2014 for a Priority Mila Express flat-rate envelope. Banknote Corporation of America for Sennett Security Products created the offset-printed stamps, to be issued to post offices in panes of 10. Three million self-adhesive stamps were printed.

Dan Cosgrove created the stamp design which features the USS Arizona Memorial. Mr. Cosgrove has illustrated the Priority and Express Mail stamps issued by the USPS since 2008. The Scott catalog has categorized this new stamp series with the title “American Landmarks.

This battleship was heavily bombed by the Japanese during the Dec. 7, 1941 aerial attack on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor. The Memorial on the site of the sunken ship, honors the 1,117 sailors aboard the ship who died in the infamous attack. The Memorial was designed by architect Alfred Preis and was dedicated on May 30, 1962.

If you collect Priority and/or Express Mail stamps, you may not want to let this one get away. It certainly commemorates an important event in our history, and is a great tribute to the sailors who gave their lives for what they believed in. Granted the stamp is a bit pricey, and won’t make you a fortune down the line, but it does pay homage to the servicemen of World War 2.
Some of the particulars on this stamp are as follows:

• First Day--March 13, 2014 at Honolulu, Hawaii and nationwide thereafter.
• Design--Illustrated by Dan Cosgrove, Falls Church, Va.
• Printing Process--offset with microprinting.
• Processor--Banknote Corporation of America for Sennett Security Products.
• Issue Quantity--Quantity printed is three million with self-adhesive.

Collectors requesting first-day cancels are encouraged to purchase their own stamps and affix them to the envelopes. The first-day cover envelopes should be addressed for return ( a removable label may be used), and mailed in a larger envelope addressed to the USS Arizona Memorial Stamp. Postmaster, 3600 Aolele St., Honolulu. HI 96820-9998. Requests for first-day cancels must be postmarked by May 13.
