Heart - 12" Quilt Block

Here's an simple pieced heart pattern that you can use in your quilt projects.  We'll be using the square in the corner technique for greater accuracy.

 Other Sizes:  8" block pattern, 6" block pattern

Sewing Instructions:

Step 1: Using a ruler and a pencil (or your favorite marking method), draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of all tan 3-1/2" squares and 6-1/2" squares.

Step 2: Place a tan 3-1/2" square on the right end of a red 3-1/2" x 6-1/2" rectangle (right sides together) as shown below. Stitch a seam on the diagonal line that you drew Step 1. Trim the fabric above the sewn line to 1/4" and press the seam toward the tan fabric. Repeat on the left end and press the seam toward the brown fabric. Repeat once more for a total of two flying geese units.

Step 3: Place a tan 6-1/2" square on the bottom left corner of a red 9-1/2" x 12-1/2" rectangle (right sides together) as shown below. Stitch a seam on the diagonal line that you drew Step 1. Trim the fabric below the sewn line to 1/4" and press the seam toward the tan fabric. Repeat on the bottom right corner and press the seam toward the tan fabric.

Step 4: With right sides together and using a 1/4" seam, stitch the Flying Geese units together as shown below and press the seam to one side.  The top of the heart has been made.  Now sew the top of the heart to the bottom of the heart as shown below.  Press the seam toward the bottom of the heart.
