The next block in our state block series is Louisiana Variation. We'll use the square-in-the-corner technique for greater accuracy.
Sewing Instructions: Step 1: With a pencil (or your favorite marking method), draw two diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of all brown 3-1/2" squares.
Step 2: Place a brown 3-1/2" square on the right end of an orange 3-1/2" x 6-1/2" rectangle (right sides together) as shown below. Stitch a seam on the diagonal line that you drew Step 1. Trim the fabric above the sewn line to 1/4" and press the seam toward the brown fabric. Repeat on the left end and press the seam toward the brown fabric. Repeat three more times for a total of four flying geese units.
Step 3: Place a brown 3-1/2" square on the right end of a yellow 3-1/2" x 6-1/2" rectangle (right sides together) as shown below. Stitch a seam on the diagonal line that you drew Step 1. Trim the fabric above the sewn line to 1/4" and press the seam toward the brown fabric. Repeat three more times for a total of four point units.
Step 4: With right sides together, stitch a flying geese unit (Step 2) to the top of a point unit (Step 3) as shown below. Repeat for a total of four.
Step 5: Arrange the sections as shown below and sew into rows (Diagram 1). Sew the rows (Diagram 2) together to finish the block (Diagram 3) .
