Holidays should be fun, not trials and tribulations every few months! In this
spirit -- here are some hints and tips to lower your Spring Holiday costs and
make holidays more fun!
One fun holiday activity is dyeing Easter Eggs. We use natural dyes found right
in our kitchen. Two very easy dyes are the use of onion skins and tumeric (not
together!)
Tumeric Dye
To dye a wonderful bright yellow put a teaspoon of tumeric (or curry powder) in
a cup of boiling water. Let cool and dip the eggs. They will be bright Yellow.
Onion Dye for Pink and Yellow
Save your Onion skins (the dry outer part) untill you have a cup or so.
To dye pink:
Bring a cup of water to boil. Take off the heat and add the onion skins and a
tablesppon of vinegar. Let cool. This will dye pink.
To dye yellow:
Boil the onion skins in hot water. This turns the dye yellow. Add a Tablespoon
of vinergar and let cool.
Dip the eggs in the cooled dyes and have beautiful eggs --almost for free!!
Koolaide and Jello:
To get bright jewel tones add half a package of Koolaide (flavoraide, mixaide,
etc..) to a cup of hot water with one tablespoon of vinegar. Koolaide is a food
grade dye. It will dye the bright neon colors some kids prefer!
Or use both!!! Fill that Easter Basket!!
To make candies use homemade fudge and roll into balls or other shapes. Wrap in
foil. Or melt Chocolate ( or other flavor) chips and mold into desired shapes.
Make some fun stufffed toys to add to the baskets. Use shredded paper for the grass padding.
This will give you a wonderful Easter Gift basket for little cost and be much
more fun than just buying it.
