Real Hair Solutions for Big, Frizzy Hair
Frizzy hair almost always needs extra moisturizing. When choosing a shampoo or conditioner, look for the words smoothing, moisturizing or hydrating. These products will contain emollients to smooth the hair shaft and offer more control during styling.
After the hair is towel dried you will want to apply one or more of the many smoothing agents to be found in stores.
Smoothing serums and frizz serums aid in smoothing the hair but usually do not offer the holding quality of other products. Some of these are light in weight and can be used alone on hair that gets frizzy but becomes overly limp with more product. Others are heavy in nature and aid in controlling hair with too much body. The heavier product should be used sparingly until you have experience in its effect on your type of hair. Serums are most often applied to wet hair.
Hair crèmes are creamy in form and usually add control to the hair along with the frizz relief properties. They can be used on wet hair or worked into dry hair and provide a certain amount of hold.
Gels offer the maximum in hold and are usually better at relieving frizz than a mousse. The layering of several of these products will increase the amount of frizz control.
Reading labels, advice from your hairdresser and experimenting will help you decide which products will work best for you.
Once you have decided on the proper products pay close attention to drying and styling your hair. I prefer to apply a frizz serum and hair crème and then let my hair air dry until it is damp but not dripping wet. Actual styling will not take place until the last few minutes of drying time. Be sure to exercise control over the hair while it is drying. Concentrate on small areas and work slowly. Allowing the hair to blow around will only accentuate the unruliness. I have found that a round boar-bristle brush works best to smooth out very curly hair, leaving it with a healthy shine.
Make sure the hair is completely dry. Any moisture in the hair will cause it to revert to its frizzy texture. You may use several tools to finish your style. A one and one half inch curling iron or larger will smooth out left over unruliness and give it shape. A paddle brush used with a blow dryer will put the finishing touches on a straight style. When your hair is dried and styled, further styling and smoothing is offered by pomades and hair waxes.
Finish your style with a flexible hair spray and, even in humidity, everyday will be a "Good Hair Day".
