Maybe it’s me, maybe it’s global warming. Whatever the cause, summers appear to be getting hotter. And while we all enjoy time in the sun, it’s often hard to beat the heat even for those sitting in the shade.
If you’re a senior, hot weather can cause problems that are more serious than mild discomfort. Here are some ideas to keep you healthy so you can enjoy warm weather wherever your travels take you.
Generally as people age, blood circulation may be altered. This combined with the fact that, when it is very hot, blood goes to the skin and blood flow to other vital organs is lessened, may make seniors more susceptible to heat stroke and may aggravate other medical conditions. To keep cool, relax in the shade, wear a hat and light clothing that covers your arms and legs, avoid activities that are strenuous and always wear sunscreen.
Seniors tend to be prone to dehydration in hot weather due to the use of medications/diuretics. One way to beat the effects of dehydration is to increase fluid intake and drink more frequently. Carry a small bottle of water when you’re out and about.
Humidity and pollution are other factors that may make breathing more difficult especially for seniors with asthma and other lung conditions. On particularly humid days, spend shorter periods of time outdoors and limit physical activity.
With a little bit of planning, you can ensure your time in the sun stays fun.
