Mary Kate and Ashley Style for School

What is your back-to-school look this year?

I’ve chosen four actresses who wear trendy and very individual looks. Each, in her own way, makes a fashion statement that will be heard in schools across the country.

Starting with the Olsen twins:
Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen can wear their hair both shiny straight or scrunched into be waves with ease. Their hair-color -in varying shades of blonde- gives either style a glamorous appeal.

Waves:
Be sure to use a product that encourages wave and that is a strong hold unless your hair waves on its own. See instructions for scrunching HERE.
The twin’s use product that not only holds, but gives their hair a "beach" or "lived-in" appearance. Nothing wispy or flyaway here.
Experiment with products to find what works best for your hair.
  • Hair Crème encourages wave and gives a ‘chunky’ look but may not be a strong hold.
  • Styling Foam is easy to work with. Simply put some in your hand and scrunch it into your hair, working on small sections. The foam disappears as it dries and it will hold the wave in. The more you work with the foam and your hair, the more fullness and body you will build.
  • Spray Foam has the same holding and setting qualities as the Spray Foam. Simply spray it on your damp or dry hair and scrunch as you go. It dries fast for a sure set.

Straight:
Shampoo your hair with moisturizing or smoothing products and use the conditioner that goes with it. Use a paddle brush or any brush with a lot of teeth as you blow your hair completely dry, brushing as you go.
Use a flat iron on medium sized strands of hair. Start at the top of the strand and pull the flat iron slowly down the shaft to the ends. Don’t go over a strand more than twice. They get very hot and over-heated hair can dry out. Continue until all of the hair is straightened. Even when your hair is naturally straight, using a flat iron on it will give a sleeker, shinier appearance.

Afterward, spray a fine mist of shine all over your hair. You can also use shine drops or serum, making sure to apply it evenly and being aware that this type tends to go on heavier than a spray shine.

Hair color:
Mary Kate and Ashley usually stay with chunky highlights in two or three shades of blonde. The color ranges from dark blonde (almost looks light brown) to extra light blonde. The highlights are applied in large strands giving a definite streaky look. This works well with the scrunched "beach" look and the sleek and straight style.

Update: I love Mary Kate's warm brown shade. It's great for her complexion. Often a darker shade of hair color shows off blue eyes, as if obvious with Mary Kate.

Stay tuned for Ann Hathaway's and Gwyneth Paltrow's trend-setting style.
