Spanish Irregular Verbs (Part III): Irregular First Person (Yo) When we want to conjugate any regular verb, we just remove the infinitive ending (-ar, -er, -ir) and add the corresponding conjugation ending. Right? Example: Hablar is a regular verb and belongs to the First Conjugation type. So, if we want to conjugate it (Present tense), we just remove the infinitive ending (-ar) and add the Present tense endings: Yo hablo Tu hablas El / Ella / Usted habla Nosotros hablamos Vosotros habláis Ellos / Ustedes hablan But some Spanish verbs follow the regular conjugation patterns except for the "Yo" form. They are called: "Verbs with Irregular first person". (Take care, as some of them can also belong to the "Stem-changing" irregular verbs group). In order to make it easier, we'll study these verbs in categories: 1. "GO" verbs 2. "OY" verbs 3. "ZCO" verbs 4. Others First category: "GO" verbs: Their "yo" forms end in "-go". Examples: yo hago (I make, I do); yo traigo (I bring). List of -go verbs: Caer (To fall): yo caigo | tu caes | él / ella / usted cae nosotros caemos | vosotros caéis | ellos / ustedes caen Decir (To say - To tell): yo digo | tu dices | él / ella / usted dice nosotros decimos | vosotros decís | ellos / ustedes dicen Hacer (To make - To do): yo hago | tu haces | él / ella / usted hace nosotros hacemos | vosotros hacéis | ellos / ustedes hacen Oír (To hear): yo oigo | tu oyes | él / ella / usted oye nosotros oímos | vosotros oís | ellos / ustedes oyen Poner (To put): yo pongo | tu pones | él / ella / usted pone nosotros ponemos | vosotros ponéis | ellos / ustedes ponen Salir (To go out): yo salgo | tu sales | él / ella / usted sale nosotros salimos | vosotros salís | ellos / ustedes salen Satisfacer (*) (To satisfy): yo satisfago | tu satisfaces | él / ella / usted satisface nosotros satisfacemos | vosotros satisfacéis | ellos / ustedes satisfacen Seguir (To follow): yo sigo | tu sigues | él / ella / usted sigue nosotros seguimos | vosotros seguís | ellos / ustedes siguen Tener (To have): yo tengo | tu tienes | él / ella / usted tiene nosotros tenemos | vosotros tenéis | ellos / ustedes tienen Traer (To bring): yo traigo | tu traes | él / ella / usted trae nosotros traemos | vosotros traéis | ellos / ustedes traen Valer (To be worth, to cost): yo valgo | tu vales | él / ella / usted vale nosotros valemos | vosotros valéis | ellos / ustedes valen Venir (To come): yo vengo | tu vienes | él / ella / usted viene nosotros venimos | vosotros venís | ellos / ustedes vienen (*) Note that this verb (Satisfacer) is a compound verb (satisf+hacer), so it will be conjugated by writing "satisfy" before the concret "hacer" form. Satisf+ago Satisfy+aces Satisfy+ace (In this case, it is obviously written without letter "h": Not "satisfhago" but "satisfago"). There are a lot of Spanish compound verbs which are conjugated like the root verb. Examples: Componer (Com+poner) --> Yo compongo Detener (De+tener) --> Yo detengo Deshacer (Des+hacer)--> Yo deshago It is very important to learn these verbs. There is a method very useful: Make flashcards and review them whenever you can. It works! Next lesson, we'll go on reviewing the rest of "yo" irregular verbs and the remaining categories. Get tuned! As always, for any question or doubt, feel free to e-mail me or just post a message at the forum. ¡Que tenga un buen día! Angeles F.
