Horror News - Halloween Online
Guest Author - Danielle Hollister

It's that ghoulish time of year when horror writers, readers and Halloween lovers get wickedly excited about the macabre madness of this howling holiday. In order to enhance your eerie experiences, I have compiled an comprehensive collection of frightful, informative websites related to horror and Halloween. I searched at length to find the most current resources covering topics including:

  • Publications seeking submissions of Horror fiction, poetry and more...

  • Sites providing the latest news and reviews and other helpful starting points for horror enthusiasts.

HORROR RELATED PUBLICATIONS SEEKING SUBMISSIONS FROM WRITERS

  1. The Undead
Permuted Press is pleased to announce that short story submissions are now being accepted for a chance to be published in the upcoming anthology of zombie tales The Undead. Submission is free and stories are welcomed from aspiring and established authors. Authors chosen for inclusion will receive a free copy of The Undead at publication!

Submission Guidelines • Stories must be zombie themed. This includes the truly undead (Romero-style) or other variations (28 Days-style, etc.). • No stories over 10,000 words. • Entries must never have been published offline. Stories published online are accepted. • There is no entry fee. Selected authors will pay nothing. • Only the original author may submit the story. • If the way your zombies work is not clear from the story you may include a background blurb at the beginning (no more than 300 words). Only include this if it is necessary for the story to make sense. • Stories may not be derivative of any other work (books, movies, etc.) unless you are the copyright holder of that work. • No more than 3 submissions per author. • Authors for chosen entries will be required to sign a publication contract. • Stories must be submitted no later than January 1, 2005. • All authors retain copyright.

  2. Decompositions
Seeks dark poetry. "Think horror with a capital H. Twisted fantasy is also acceptable. I don't care if your last name is Poe, your masterpiece is entitled "Ode to the Color Black" or your major influence is Dr. Seuss, my bottom line is I have to like it. It can be pornographic, laugh out loud funny, and even rhyme, just as long as your slimey tentacled verse grabs me, and says in a voice born of the Abyss "Publish me or Perish." That's what I'm looking for. Hint - shorter works stand a much better chance of being published."

Payment is two dollars per poem, payable upon acceptance.

  3. c h i a r o s c u r o
This "slick webzine featuring some of the best fiction and poetry from some well-known and not so well known names," accepts submissions of Fiction:
    Guidelines
Dark. Well-written. 4,000 words or less. Rich Text Format (.rtf) or Microsoft Word (.doc) attachments. No reprints. Simultaneous submissions okay, as long as you tell us it's simultaneous. No multiple submissions.

Payment (on publication): 5 cents per word (USD).

  4. The Harrow
This online reviewed literary magazine devoted to publishing original and complete works of fantasy and horror. "Young, new, and amateur writers are especially welcome to submit their work. Writers will participate in a formal review process and work with the editor on any revisions that are requested before acceptance. The Harrow is intended to be a place to begin rather than to end and works to support writers as they develop their careers."

Autumn, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, the New Year. What's scary about any of them? You tell me — I'd love to see your seasonal stories now.

Seeks stories, poems, and art that fall within the fantasy and horror genres. In general, that implies a work that involves the presence or suspected presence of the magical or supernatural, and/or that takes place in an alternate time or world (e.g., historical fantasy, swords'n'sorcery). Science fiction and "literary" fiction are not appropriate for The Harrow.

Length: Works of short-story length or less.
Flash fiction is less than 750 words, and extreme shorts are no more than 55 words. A short story is less than 7,500 words; a novelette is between 7,500 words to 17,500 words; a novella is between 17,500 words to 40,000 words; and a novel is 40,000 words or more.

Does not pay for any of the non-contest works it accepts and puts online. Does pay contest winners.

  5. Cemetery Dance Magazine
"We receive more than 500 short story submissions each and every month for Cemetery Dance magazine. That's an amazing amount of fiction to consider and keeping open lines of communication with writers isn't always an easy task, especially with our hectic schedule. Hopefully, this feature -- The Writer's Corner -- will help us keep interested writers up-to-date on our current response time, any specific needs that might arise for the magazine, and any breaking news related to writers and artists. The Writer's Corner will also be printing writing-related articles from many of the top authors in the genre."

Author and artist submission guidelines for every current Cemetery Dance project and publication are available via our email autoresponder. Just send a blank email to: guidelines@cemeterydance.com and you'll receive all of our current guidelines via email in just a few minutes!

  7. Bloodletters
This online horror ezine seeks submissions based on themes.Every issue has a theme and we will pick stories based on those themes. The next edition's concept:

WITCHES AND WARLOCKS: Tales of misappropriated magic, spells gone awry and battles gone astray--Help us make our October issue the most terrifying yet!

WHAT WE WANT: We are looking for: Science fiction, horror and dark fantasy short stories. Works must be free of grammatical or spelling errors or they will automatically be rejected. We are searching for stories that have a discomforting linger long after the reader has finished. We are not looking for pornographic works, nor are we looking for stories which are nothing more than long exploitive torture sequences.

SUBMITTING YOUR WORK: We accept stories between 2,000-10,000 words. Novellas up to 30,000 words will be considered. Please send your short story to parkers_poison@yahoo.ca as a .txt word attachment in your email. Place FICTION SUBMISSION in your subject line--This is very important, for if you don't the story will probably be deleted unread and be assumed to be spam. Give us your name, email, the title and length of the story in your email.

PAYMENT: Five dollars US for every story as well as provide opportunities for participation in upcoming CD anthologies.

  8. Lost In The Dark
"We'd love to see work from new and emerging writers. It's why Lost in the Dark was created."

Seeks Horror and dark fantasy. Stories and poetry that scare us, make us think of shadowy corners and things that go bump in the night, make our limbs tremble, take us to another place, time, or land, and stay with us long after we've read them. Stretch the limits of the genres and your imagination-- although we don't object to the so-called 'tired' themes (werewolves, vampires, ghosts, etc), a new spin would be nice to read. Humor is fun, too-- nothing better than being scared out of your wits, then getting a big belly laugh right afterward. Profanity and sexual situations are fine, as long as they aren't the bulk of your piece. Reviews should be limited to reviews of fiction novels-- there are plenty of other sites out there that cover horror movies. The age of the book need not matter, either. Articles can run the gamut; from how-tos on horror and dark fantasy to haunted houses, or writers' experiences. If you're not sure, query.

We do not accept science fiction. We also would like to see work that isn't littered with spelling and grammatical errors; that will greatly decrease your chances of being published (here or anywhere else).

Fiction: we take stories from 500 to 12,500 words. This is a place where those stories that are just too long might find a place. No flash fiction, however. Poetry: 75 to 500 words. We might consider an epic poem; query the Editor-in-Chief first. No haikus. Reviews & Articles: There is no applicable word count to these.

There is no payment at this time. We will offer a link to your home site or email along with a bio if you so desire.

  9. DodsleyPages
NEW Tales, poems etc.... 1500 max... for Halloween Edition of the pages..."I am still collecting work regarding The Bone Crusher (Cruncher) theme. Work of the darkest nature. Poetry and art work also welcome. 1500 word max. Posted in body of email please."

I offer writers a chance to write about what they want - no themes. 1000 words max.

  3. A History of Horror
"Where are the roots of the horror genre? How far back can we trace the figures of the vampire, the werewolf and Frankenstein's monster? What of the Gothic novel, and how did the horror of distant castles transform into that of school camps and shopping malls? Who were the visionaries (and what horrible things happened to them)? Have people always been scared of the same things? This timeline shows the stepping stones along the path from the Inquisition to the Blair Witch, from Dante's Inferno to Hellraiser. Eight centuries of great works, and the events and people behind them.
