Real People with Real Wireless Offices - Barbara Payne
This week's featured person with a wireless office is Barbara Payne, a full time technical writer who has over twenty years of experience.

1. Why did you decide to go wireless?
It was an easy decision. Not only were the wires on my desk threatening
to take over my office, but I was blogging with a bunch of people who
could hardly shut up about wireless. What could I do? But seriously, I
needed a part-time assistant to help in my office and realized I would
need to set up a network in order to have two computers that could
access the same information. Wireless was the logical pick for that
since heaven knows I didn't need anymore wires. And then I thought how
nice it might be to be able to take my laptop and work somewhere fun.

And it really is, by the way. Nice.

2. How has having a wireless office improved your productivity?
My assistant comes in and takes over the main computer while I just keep
working away in the other room. Plus, when I can get out of the office,
sometimes I get a whole lot more work done on a project because I don't
even turn on the email or other programs that often distract me.

3. Have you had any major problems?
Nothing major--except when my laptop hard drive crashed while I was out
working wirelessly. Probably had nothing at all to do with my
wirelessness--maybe more to do with either Dell's product or Microsoft's
vulnerability to viruses. I don't even want to think about either one of
them.

4. How do you have your office set up?
Two computers. A desktop in my office, a laptop out in the living area
(so I can work while my pet rabbit Angelina is out running around).

5. Do you have any recommendations or suggestions for people who are
planning to set up a wireless office?
Hire an expert--and trust him or her. Let the expert tell you what to
order and how to use it. Don't waste your time trying to do it
yourself--unless IT is your business.
