The Clipper Ship Inn, Salem, Mass.

The Clipper Ship Inn in Salem, Mass, bills itself as the only motel in Salem. After staying there with my family, I'd call it an inn-like experience at a motel price.

We stayed in one of the 12 suites, with a living room, table, refrigerator and microwave. (We really appreciated the extra space and appliances since we had our teen-age son with us.) We also appreciated the peaceful and relaxed atmosphere.

Our room was tastefully decorated in white and light greens with attractive paintings on the wall. The staff was courteous and helpful, directing us to restaurants, ATM's and pizzerias that delivered.

There's a lovely shaded picnic area out in front, and even a resident cat to welcome customers. The motel is conveniently located with walking distances of many of Salem's attractions and restaurants.

Owner Suzanne Sullivan took over the business from her dad and uncle, who ran the inn after her grandfather retired. Her grandfather, a world traveler, started the Clipper Ship Inn some 45 years ago, she said.

The Clipper Ship Inn is located at 40 Bridge Street, Route 1A, in Salem. They can be reached at 978-745-8022; their website is located at Clipper Ship Inn.
