Deborah Norville shares a timely message that applies to each of us. How respectfully, or disrespectfully, we treat each other has a ripple effect. We experience the influence and power of respect in the home, workplace, grocery store, movie theater and everywhere else. Respect begins with us!
In The Power of Respect – Benefit from the Most Forgotten Element of Success the author doesn’t preach, lecture or scold, she simply reminds us that without respect we suffer not only personally but also, as a society. Is the element of respect gone from our society? What has happened to common courtesies like please, thank you and having someone hold the door open? There are cell phones ringing at the movie theater, arguing at the dinner table, name calling in the grocery store – you know what I mean, a feeling that we no longer care about the well being of others.
The lack of day-to-day respect is the premise of The Power of Respect – Benefit from the Most Forgotten Element of Success by Deborah Norville. We have to begin teaching respect in the home and reflecting the respect we have for ourselves back out into the world. Respect, the author contends, begins inside us!
As a respected television journalist, the author speaks first hand of the need for respect in today’s world. I agree with her, there seems to be a lack of respect for our institutions, our communities and even ourselves.
This book is easy to read – the message is important but she doesn’t hit you over the head with it. I enjoyed the variety of approaches she used to get her message across to the reader:
1. Quotes peppered through out the pages
2. She wrote as if speaking to friends
3. Real life examples, facts and stories
4. “Power of Respect Reminders” to reinforce each chapter
5. “Respect Tips” on the pages
My favorite chapter was, “It’s On The Inside – The Power of Self-Respect.” The author reinforces that only you control self-respect - you hold the key to how well you respect yourself. How well you treat yourself is how well the rest of the world will treat you. Self-respect is also a powerful personal and professional success tool. I particularly liked the “Self-Respect Inspection” quiz.
The Power of Respect – Benefit from the Most Forgotten Element of Success isn’t sharing any new and startling scientific findings or psychological revelations. What it does share is an interesting read about how we can begin one person at a time to be more respectful and become an example to others. I recommend this book for mothers, employers and everyone who wants to respectfully make a difference!
