The Great Ziegfeld

The Great Ziegfeld
The life and times of Florenz Ziegfeld Jr aren’t as glorious as they appear. From a theater producer to the name behind some of Hollywood’s biggest reviews in the 1920s, fame and fortune at times comes at a high price. Here are some movie mistakes to look for while watching “The Great Ziegfeld”.

· Ziegfeld arrives to see his father and Mary Lou. He puts his hat and cane in a chair and has a heart shaped box of candy tucked under his left arm. It cuts to a wider, farther view and the heart shaped box is under his right arm. He then proceeds to hide it behind his back.

· Mary Lou is sitting on the couch, eating the candy. She starts to cry and slides the box of candy off her lap and onto the seat next to her. When Ziegfeld goes to comfort her, the box is farther away and sitting on the box top.

· Anna is arguing with Pierre. She passes by the piano and it sounds like she runs her fingers over the keys but she actually never touches it.

· After the Ziegfeld Follies Show, Anna is visiting Audrey in her dressing room. Anna admires the bracelet on Anna’s left wrist. In the wider view of the two, when Anna asks, “Is this from your old friend too?”, Anna’s left hand is on top of Audrey’s left arm. It cuts to a close-up of Anna when she says, “It’s charming”, and it’s her right hand that is now on top of Audrey’s arm.

· Ziegfeld is telling Sidney to contact Eddie Cantor. Sidney is standing next to Ziegfeld who is sitting in his chair. There is nothing in Sidney’s hand as he listens to Ziegfeld talk. But, in the wider view, when Ziegfeld says, “Wasn’t that the bell, Sidney?”, there is now a pad of paper in his left hand which he puts in his right pocket as he walks to the door.

“The Great Ziegfeld” (1936) stars William Powell, Myrna Loy, Luise Rainer, Frank Morgan, Fanny Brice, Virginia Bruce, Reginald Owen and Ray Bolger. It runs 176 minutes and is rated “Passed”.
