Rock The Vote UK

Rock The Vote UK
The UK elections are being held on May 5th, and Rock star wannabe Tony Blair has no doubt rallied around some of his 'hip, young' pop star mates to encourage apathetic voters to get involved and mark the box.

Robbie Williams has just been drafted along with Chris Martin of Coldplay, English wannabe Madonna and Will Young, along with 'comedians' Frank Skinner and Al Murray (sorry about the '' i'm sure they're both very funny, just not when i've seen them.)

Rock The Vote has been in operation in the US for sometime with good success, but will it work here? Well they have some very good names involved, the right kind of age-group is being targeted and seeing as Emmaline Pankhurst and her suffragettes are sadly slowly but surely being forgotten, this could be the shake-up the younger voters need.

Tony Blair has long since been a buddy of the pop world, with stars such as Noel Gallagher of Oasis and Bono of U2 assisting the Prime Minister with his popularity vote, a memorable star-studded party was held at number 10 almost as soon as he and Cherie were handed the keys, and it did a lot for his image way back when he was elected.

The difficult thing about all this is that it's not just the young voters who have gained apathy. I'm not at the age where i'll say 'well seeing that Robbie is encouraging us, go on then i'll vote' and I know that older male voters in particular won't go in for this idea.

The problem isn't that there aren't enough 'Showbiz' supporters, but the idea that we're all so confused about who on earth to vote for, we'd prefer clearer yes/no answers to questions we're putting forward instead of having millionaire stars telling us to get involved when they have no clue what it's like to be a single Mum or Dad on benefits or a carer of a disabled loved one for example, for whom the leader of this country will speak. These kinds of people won't necessarily be affected by whoever gets in because if they raise taxes, they're so loaded it really won't be a factor to them, and their kids already go to the best schools because they can afford the best of everything and there's no doubt that they never use the NHS system because they can afford to go private to the best hospitals anyway.

This is a great opportunity to put my say-so out there, and before Labour/Conservative/Lib Dem etc. supporters e-mail me, this is my opinion and my opinion only!

I'm not interested in WHO tells me to use my vote, but I do agree that anything should be done to get everyone voting. The internet is a fabulous tool which could be used to our advantage in getting all sides and all policies from each party, so have a look at their websites. Who speaks loudest to you? Has a politician said something which will affect YOUR family, be it for the best or the worst? If there is only one factor in one party's policy which will improve your life and your future, then it will take less than a minute to tick the box for them and for you.

You may choose to vote for a minor party, The Green Party for example, BNP if they float your own boat, but just vote, even if it makes no difference whatsoever to the leader of the country, it may mean that that party will get more seats in Parliment thus adding an extra voice to even the minority.

The frustration that most of us feel when we hear about immigration and MRSA, for God's sake, MRSA? Am I the only one who wants to scream from the rooftops 'Clean The Damn Hospitals before more people die!!'? This time around, Labour is concentrating on education, education, education. The people I know and speak to are saying this country is falling to pieces and is filthy. I read somewhere that Romanian hospitals are better and cleaner than ours. And they want to concentrate on education?

Everyday, decent, hardworking teachers are being attacked and humiliated by jumped-up little brats who 'know their rights' because this country has gone 'Politically Correct' insane! We're being asked to stop singing traditional nativity songs and banned from waving proudly St Georges flag on St Georges Day incase it 'offends' other nations. Is it me or is that crazy? Would you want to go abroad, say for example to Spain, only for their government to say, 'Hey there's lots of minorities here, take the Spanish flag down, they might get upset'

Isn't it fantastic when we visit countries and find out THEIR culture, THEIR traditions? We learn so much more about each other as a human race by learning each others traditions and where they came from. But the UK is losing it. We're not supposed to speak out about such issues in case we're being cast as 'racist'. I think we should learn more about the cultural diversities who are now being brought to our country, but we need to keep our own culture too. Can you imagine going to Africa for example and having their government say 'There's a lot of British people living here, i'm afraid you're not allowed to do your traditional dance in case they get offended'. It wouldn't happen because we won't get offended. I am offended by being asked not to be British.

I like being British, I like Britain. I would like being an Iraqi had I been born in Iraq, I would like being French if I was born in France. But I was born here, and I want my son who was born here to be able to sing the traditional songs I sung when I was little, and my son will have the advantage over me because I went to school with white Welsh kids, my son will go to school with Black/Asian/Muslim/Jewish children of all colours. He can sing Jamaican or African or Muslim songs if he and the school wants to, that way we'll all learn more about each other. And the only way this will all happen is if we decide who gets in to Parliment. It's no good saying if only this would happen, if only the pubs were open later, if only they'd do something about speed cameras, if only they'd clean the damn hospitals, if only my benefits were higher. If only's mean nothing and wishes only come true if you work at them happening.

Final note - Grow up Tony Blair, Michael Howard and Charles Kennedy et al, we are sick of you saying 'Oh but he said this, he's one of those, he's lying' WE DONT CARE what you think of each other, we care about what you're going to do for us, and no number of uber-rich famous faces will change that.
