Finding a good doctor

Establishing a good relationship with a doctor is very important. You should be able to talk to your doctor openly about health and life issues that concern you. You should also feel comfortable with your doctor, and feel that you can trust him/her with your health care. Your health care needs should be met by your doctor, and you should leave his/her office with peace of mind that you are in good hands.

Sometimes due to hectic schedules, patients are treated like a revolving door, and they are left feeling uncared for with unanswered questions. But often doctors do take the time out to care for you on a personal, one on one basis. It is that kind of a doctor that you want and need to trust with your health and well being.

It is important to research and test a doctor before accepting one as your own. Some helpful suggestions for finding a doctor for you that is a perfect fit are:

1. Ask for references from your family, friends, employer, and most importantly your health insurance company. These important people in your life are wise and give good advice. They can direct you to a good doctor.

2. Search for a doctor when you are healthy. When you are unhealthy you will not have the mental or physical energy to make good decisions, or review a doctors qualifications.

3. Research the doctors credentials easily at The American Medical Association www.ama-assn.org.

4. Visit with the doctor you have chosen.

It is important that you feel cared for by your doctor, and that your questions are answered properly. Good communication is also a must. If you leave the office feeling good with the peace of mind knowing you experienced these important things with your doctor, then that doctor is one to keep and build a good relationship with.

Donít be afraid to try out a few different doctors until you find one that gives you that kind of peace of mind. Building a relationship takes time, effort and care.

There are many good doctors out there that genuinely care about people, that is the reason they began their career in medicine in the first place--to help and heal people. It is this kind of doctor that will take the time to talk with you, calm your fears, and help you to get healthy.
