Kuala Lumpur,Malaysia, is a bargain holiday

Kuala Lumpur is a modern city where the new embraces the old, and where modern sophistication meets colourful tradition. More than any other city in Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, or "KL" as it is commonly known, is the focal city in modern Malaysia. While the city's past is still present in the evocative British colonial buildings of the Dataran Merdeka and the midnight lamps of the Petaling Street nightmarket, the city's bustling streets, its shining, modern office towers, and its cosmopolitan air, project a spirit of progress and symbolize Malaysia's unhesitating leap into the future.

A typical KL guided tour starts off at the colonial core around Merdeka Square and the Chinatown enclave followed by a trip to the warren of plank board passages of Chow Kit Market and the Muzium Negara in the south. Enjoy the lush greenery here, which spreads across the Lake Gardens and Taman Titiwangsa sanctuaries in the city centre, to the wider expanses of Templar Park and the cool hill station of Genting Highlands, less than an hour away.

2000 metres above sea level is Genting Highlands, a multi-million Ringgit playground with over 40 rides, making it Malaysia's biggest theme park. Start your holiday with a bang here with tons of excitement and fun at the Indoor and Outdoor Theme Park, with a plethora of thrilling adventures and rides for everyone.

After Singapore, Kuala Lumpur is Southeast Asiaís youngest capital and one of the most economically successful. A developing metropolis, Malaysiaís city centre is always being upgraded and modernised. "Bahasa Malaysia" is the official Malaysian language, though various Chinese, English and Indian languages are also widely spoken and the dominant religion of the country is Islam.

Get ready to gape at the 88-storey Petronas Twin Towers, once considered the tallest twin structures in the world. Having been inspired by Islamic architecture, this gleaming mega-structure, which stands 452 metres tall, has retained its claim to fame until 2004 when Taipei built a 101 floor monster, measuring 508 metres.

If you are fond of marine life, nestled in the heart of the bustling Golden Triangle of Kuala Lumpur and within walking distance from the iconic Petronas Twin Towers, is the Aquaria KLCC, which is a mind boggling aquarium showcasing over 5,000 different exhibits, over a sprawling multi-level space on the Concourse Level of the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

A visit to the heritage Central Market takes one away from the glitzy malls we have become accustomed to across the world. Built in 1888, Central Market is located along Jalan Hang Kasturi, a few minutes away from Petaling Street, and was originally an open air wet market. It has since been classified as a Heritage Site by the Malaysian Heritage Society and it is now a landmark for Malaysian culture and heritage.

We were stunned with the beauty of the Moorish looking Supreme Court in KL,also called the Sultan Abdul Samad Building, painted in gorgeous salmon colours. Its perfectly ticking clock tower (40m) has witnessed many historical milestones and today benevolently oversees a host of important national events, like the annual National Day Parade. Opposite the building is the Merdeka Square, where on a tall flag pole a huge Malaysian flag flaps in the wind.

And if you are into history, visit the Masjid Jamek which is situated, where both rivers the Sungei Klang and the Sungei Gombak meet. Apparently this is where Kuala Lumpur began and the mosque was built in 1907 and officially opened by the Sultan of Selangor 1909. This is where the earliest settlers In the 1850s, who were miners, built their shacks, and unload here their equipment and provisions. They would then trek up the jungle path to Ampang, where they would prospect for tin.

For shopaholics, Chinatownís Petaling Street is a bargain hunterís paradise. Go with empty suitcases to Malaysia and stock up there!Plus itís great fun shopping at night, when the whole area transforms into a lively and vibrant night market after dark, with hundreds of stalls selling all kinds of stuff at dirt-cheap prices. It is the most happening night market in the city. Do try the street food here, itís to die for!
