Langkawi Islands – The World Geopark

Langkawi Islands – The World Geopark
Langkawi is a tranquil archipelago of 140 islands located in the Andaman Sea, about 30 km off the mainland coast of northwestern Malaysia. Most of the islands are uninhabited and the largest one is Langkawi Island with the population of about 64,000 people. Langkawi was declared as a World Geopark by UNESCO in 2007 because of the rich wildlife conservation areas. There are three main conservation areas in Langkawi Geopark which are very popular among tourists: Machincang Cambrian Geofrest Park, Kilim Karst Geoforest Park and Dayang Bunting Marble Geoforest Park (Island of the Pregnant Maiden Lake). The best way to see these ecological wonders is from the top of the hill, on the Langkawi Sky Bridge which stretches above the rainforest. You can take the Cable Car to the peak of Machincang Mountain where the Langkawi Sky Bridge is located.

Points of Interests:

Seven Wells or Telaga Tujuh Waterfalls
At Machinchang Mountain you can see the Seven Wells or Telaga Tujuh Waterfalls where you can bathe in the seven pools. However, to get to the seven pools, you have to climb over 300 steps which can be quite slippery when wet. If you like trekking, there is a jungle trekking route available at the site which will lead you through a trail of up to 2,500 m. Be careful as some parts of the trail are almost upright and are not recommended for children or elderly people. Make sure you wear comfortable hiking shoes.

The Kilim Karst Geoforest Park (The Kilim River)

This area consists of three rivers which are all interconnected with a rich wildlife where you can see brown winged kingfishers, monitor lizards, swimming monkeys and hairy nosed sea otters. Outside the river there is Pirate Lagoon where we can see a collapsed cave consisting of a cave entrance from the sea into a hidden lagoon with towering limestone and smaller caves.

Langkawi Islands

There are two areas, the Southern Islands and the Northeast islands. The Southern islands are more crowded with tourists than the Northeast Islands. The most popular beaches are Cenang Beach, Pantai Tengah, Burau Bay, Pantai Kok and Datai Bay.

If you like to see spectacular views from the top of a mountain, you can visit Gunung Raya, the tallest mountain on the island, at 881 m where you can climb up to the lookout tower.
At the northern end of Cenang Beach, a visit to the Laman Padi Rice Garden is fascinating as you can see a panoramic view of Padi field and you also can get the details process of cultivating rice in the Museum which is useful and interesting.
