Horror Literature for Young Adults
Teens interested in the horror genre want quality books. Many young adult books deal with deep literary and philosophical questions. Here are a few of the best available to youth.
The Silver Kiss, by Annette Curtis Klause
Zoe is living under a lot of stress. Her mother is dying of a terminal illness, and her best friend moves away. While wandering alone she meets Simon. Simon is different from most teenagers--he's a vampire. Simon is on a quest to destroy his evil brother who is also a vampire. This book is filled with action and vampirism, while tackling larger issues of life and death.
The Tomb and Other Tales, by Howard Phillips Lovecraft
This book is a collection of H.P. Lovecraft's short stories. Lovecraft was a horror writer for pulp magazines during the 1920s and 1930s. This collection is an excellent example of adult horror suitable for young adults and why Lovecraft has impacted almost every contemporary horror writer. The stories reflect Lovecrafts interest in fear and technology.
Twilight, by Stephenie Meyer
Romance and vampires are intertwined in this supernatural Romeo and Juliet story. Seventeen-year-old Bella chooses not to move to Florida with her mother. Instead she opts to live with her father in a cabin in Washington. At her new school Bella meets Edward Cullen, whose attractiveness is more than just physical. He stands apart from other foolish high school boys. Bella discovers that Edward is a vampire who chooses to hunt animals instead of people. The situation is filled with danger as the couple attempts to keep Edward's secret and keep Bella safe from a rival clan of vampires.
The Ghost Belonged to Me, by Richard Peck
This is the story of a small boy growing up in a small town in 1913. While peering out of his bedroom window he sees a ghost. This is a less "scary" story of a boy attempting to help a ghost find its final resting place. A good selection for the young adult just venturing into horror literature.
