The Brick Testament

The Brick Testament

Presenting Bible stories in new and invigorating ways has been a challenge to teachers throughout the ages. Take a look at the Lego approach!

"The Rev." Brendan Powell Smith is an artist with a unique vision. With his books and website Smith is retelling Bible stories with Lego bricks. He calls his site The Brick Testament. What in heaven and on earth is the story?

Rev. Smith has stated that the goal of The Brick Testament is to give people an increased knowledge of the contents of The Bible in a way that is fun and compelling while staying very true to the original versions. To this end, all stories are retold using direct quotes from The Bible.

Each story is available on The Brick Testament site. Now don't think these are just nicy-nice Sunday School flannel board stories. These are works of art that convey even the more gruesome stories of The Bible. In addition to The Exodus, there are the Wilderness stories, including Massacre of the Amorites.

Smith has published book forms of his Brick Testaments. Be aware that some scenes contained on the website are not included in the books. The Brick Testament: The Story of Christmas is an amazing retelling. I admit I snickered when Gabriel told Mary that the Holy Ghost was going to come upon her. Smith has included illustrations of the Magnificat, during Mary's visitation to Elizabeth. Some of these are quite literal interpretations of the verses. Make sure to note the changes in Mary's figure. This book is brilliant in its humor, artistry, and presentation of the Christmas story. A must for every library or Christmas gift list.
