Attn: Marty Robbins, Marketing Manager
4747 Timberline Trail
Suite 1531
Toledo, OH 45678

Dear Mr. Robbins:

The job announcement in the Toledo Daily News for the marketing assistant position caught my attention, and I wanted to be the first to apply. (Mention which job you are applying for in the opening paragraph of your cover letter).

I first became interested in working for your company during my junior year of college, while taking a class in Market Research. As part of our coursework, I had to compile market research on several competing companies, and yours was clearly the forerunner. Your organization's product line, commitment to safety standards, and philosophy towards consumers completely impressed me, and I would love to become a part of your team. (This paragraph shows "why" she wants to work for them and it shows a great "fit" between the company's ideals as well as the candidate's personal values. Make sure your own cover letter explains why you would like to work for the employer.)

My resume is enclosed for your review. In addition to the coursework I completed for my Bachelors degree, I also completed an internship at XYZ Corporation. During my time there I worked with two different project teams, and I was given the opportunity to participate in several client meetings, as well. I also have two years of sales experience, which have sharpened my communication skills on a variety of levels. My employer recognized my sales performance at three quarterly sales meetings for achieving a Top 10 status. (This paragraph shows "why" they should hire her...her top qualifications for this particular job.)

I will plan to call your office in a week to confirm that you've received my resume and to schedule an appointment to discuss my qualifications for this position. In the meantime, if you need additional information about my qualifications, please feel free to contact me at (454) 123-4567. (In this paragraph, Lacey shows that she will take the initiative to call the employer. This illustrates to the employer that she will probably have a "take-charge" attitude on the job, as well. Notice how she also lists her phone number again, which makes it easy for the employer to contact her if they want.)

Thank you for considering me for this position. I'm looking forward to talking with you in the very near future.

Sincerely,

Lacey Rainer
