National Offender Registry

National Offender Registry
The National Sex Offender Registry is a database of registered sex offenders listed by area. Parents, teachers, and childcare givers can use the database to determine if there are registered sex offenders living in their neighborhoods. It is important to realize that not all sex offenders are registered, however the information will come in handy and should be included in every parents' safety strategy for their children.

Teaching children how to be safe is one of the most important steps parents can take to ensure the well being of their children. It is important for caregivers to teach children how to say no and speak up for him or herself. Studies have shown that sex offenders target children that are withdrawn, quiet, and who appear vulnerable or lonely. Encouraging children to be outspoken and loud may seem as if it is against the principles of high society and fine living, but it is necessary for children to understand that they have power in their voice.

All children need to be taught safety precautions, how to speak up against improper behavior (no matter whether it is from a child or an adult), and how to use their voice to say no. Many parents find that it is also beneficial to teach children certain self-defense tools that can come in handy should they find themselves in a dangerous situation.

The Family Watchdog site is a great tool that you can use to determine if any of your neighbors are registered sex offenders or not. You simply fill in your home information, and it will check with the registered list of sex offenders for your state. The statistics of sexual offense against children are high, with 1 out of 5 girls and 1 out of 6 boys suffering some form of sexual molestation, abuse, or assault by the time they reach the age of 18. What is also important to realize is that people whom the child knows well commit an overwhelming majority of sexual abuse, molestation, and assault crimes. Therefore, you must take the time to carefully research who your child is in contact with throughout the day, whether it is in the school environment, day care, community center, church or religious institution, or in your neighborhood.
