We'll Miss You, Alan

We'll Miss You, Alan
Dr. Alan Quartermaine arrived in Port Charles, New York, in 1977. He wed the love of his life, Monica, one year later, though it took much of the next 30 years before Alan could admit that Monica was always the only woman for him. He said good-bye to his life in Port Charles in early 2007, when he was unable to survive a massive heart attack.

In his 30 years in Port Charles, Alan fathered two sons--Alan, Jr., and Jason--and adopted two daughters--Emily and Skye. He married Monica, divorced her, married and divorced Lucy Coe, then remarried Monica. He had affairs with at least three woman and saved countless lives in the OR. He faked his death once, beat a drug addiction, accidentally killed a man, and accidentally did not kill Rick Webber on more than one occasion.

As a true Quartermaine, Alan was best at looking out for his own best interests. That is what led him to attempt to kill both Monica and Rick when he learned of their affair.

It would be fair to say he was a failure as a father, especially when it came to his sons. After spending the earliest part of the child’s life not knowing if AJ was his son or not, Alan never quite learned how to love him. He could accept AJ as his son, but never was able to love him. The opposite was true of Jason. Alan loved him, though he was never able to accept his lifestyle and career choices. In the end, he was able to admit to Monica that he loved Jason, but was not able to share those feelings with Jason.

Alan was also loyal to those he considered his friends. He helped Robin through the loss of her first love, Stone, and through her diagnosis of HIV. When she became a doctor and faced fear and discrimination from patients--and some staff members--at General Hospital, Alan stood beside her, giving her all the support she could handle. Even when he was unable to deny he’d had a heart attack at the Metro Court, Alan’s concern was for the safety of Robin, Elizabeth, and the other hostages. He went so far as to beg Emily to save Liz and her unborn child, rather than allowing him to be released.

Through it all, one man brought life to Alan Quartermaine--Stuart Damon. To say that Alan will be missed is an understatement. The only thing more heartbreaking than the loss of Alan is knowing that Mr. Damon will no longer be seen in the halls of GH or on the streets of Port Charles. Alan, Stuart, General Hospital will not be the same without you.
