Sam and Jason's Crimes
On Soapcentral.com’s Two Scoops Commentary last week, Tamilu wrote “there is no forgivable explanation for letting a total stranger walk off with someone else’s baby.” I have to agree, in part. There are a lot of events in Sam’s life that led up to that one moment, to the decision to keep her mouth shut when Maureen picked up Jake. Talking to Maureen about the loss of her daughter brought up grief that Sam stills deals with concerning the death of her own baby girl. Learning the love of her life fathered a child with another woman right after the discovery that she can’t have a child of her own—due in large part to Jason’s business dealings—was another difficult blow. Add tot hat Jason’s refusal to tell her about the baby himself after years of preaching loyalty and honesty to Sam, and Same has been in a very dark place, emotionally.
Is this an excuse, a “forgivable explanation” for Sam’s actions? Not hardly. Putting these events together, though, does at least give Sam a reason for her actions.
Which is more than can be said for Jason.
As I read through Tamilu’s column (which I do every week!), I had the distinct impression that Sam is pure evil and Jason is the embodiment of all that is good. Hmmm…. Let’s explore this, shall we?
Sam grew up with nothing. Any money her family had was “earned” by her conman father, who taught his little girl everything he knew. It was her chronic conning that first brought her to Port Charles. Her love for her child and, later, for Jason made Sam want to be a better person. It may have taken some time and some mistakes, but she did overcome that cowwoman past. She has worked to build herself into a woman she could be proud of. She may not be perfect yet, but she is trying to become a better person.
Jason had many more options than Sam. As a Quartermaine, he had endless money and opportunities at his disposal. He was well on his way t becoming a doctor, like his father, when a car accident derailed his life. With no memory of his family or his life, Jason had to make his own way in the world.
Jason became friends with Sonny, which led him down his new path in life. A life in organized crime. Before long, he became one of the most feared mob men in New York. He didn’t reach this status because of his impressive, muscular build or by making idle threats. Jason had become a skilled marksman and was not leery of using deadly force when Sonny deemed it necessary. This occupation has led to an extensive arrest record. The fact that he has never been convicted of any crime doesn’t make Jason not-guilty; it only means that his brain injury didn’t harm his intelligence.
Most recently, Jason was arrested for the murder of Sonny’s long-time rival, Lorenzo Alcazar. While sitting in prison, awaiting his trial, Jason had the audacity to blast Sam for her part in Jake’s kidnapping. This seemed an awful lot like the pot calling the kettle black. Yes, Sam committed a crime. No, she probably would not have said anything about it had Maureen not told Jason and Amelia that she had seen Sam that day. But what about Jason? He also committed a crime, yet he has yet to acknowledge his part in Alcazar’s death, other than to assure Sonny that Ric will never find the body.
Jason is really not in a position to criticize anyone for breaking the law.
