Jewel Speaks

Goodbye Alice in Wonderland is Jewel’s most autobiographical CD to date. Jewel says, “It chronicles my life from when I was homeless to where I’m at now. It’s come full circle. It’s been an amazing ride.”

Jewel openly shares that her life experiences have led up to what you now here on Goodbye Alice in Wonderland. When you listen to the CD, you can feel the emotions behind the lyrics in her songs.

She was raised in Alaska, a long way from normal pop culture. When asked how long she has been singing, Jewel responded, “I started singing early on. My dad and I did a duet when I was eight.”

When you listen to Jewel’s music, it’s hard to categorize her into one genre. After listening to her current CD, I would say its folk music with a pop twist. Her unique style is probably one reason for her mass appeal. Not wanting to be pigeonholed into one group, Jewel states, “I kind of developed my own sound.”

There’s no doubt that Jewel is a talented song writer. “I try to record and write songs in away that’s brutally honest,” Jewel comments about her songs on Goodbye Alice in Wonderland.

This multi-talented artist started off writing poetry. “I really love reading poems. Going from writing poems to writing songs was a natural progression,” says Jewel.

Although she has one previously published collection of poetry, Jewel doesn’t have plans to publish another any time soon. Even a superstar such as Jewel cares what her mother thinks. “I have a book of love poems ready to go. I don’t mind other people reading them, but I don’t want my mom to. It’s nothing vulgar, but something I just don’t want my mom to read,” she states.

In the past, Jewel didn’t worry about juggling between a personal life and a career. Now that she’s older, she’s found balance between working and enjoying life. When asked about her current boyfriend and if marriage was in her immediate future, Jewel responded, “We’ve been together for 8 years. Right now, we’re taking it easy.”

Besides singing, Jewel is an actor. She’s currently working on a cartoon for Nickoledeon. If singing and acting weren’t enough, Jewel has other talents. “I was a visual arts major in school, so I like to draw a lot.” She does a lot of drawing when she’s not busy working and she also likes working on her ranch.

Although it’s clear she has all these other talents, Jewel’s first love is singing. “I’ve been doing it for so long. I don’t have to think about it. It’s like breathing,” says Jewel.
