The Venice Carnival was most popular through Europe around the mid 1800s. It was a chance for people to mix with others they would not normally keep company with. It was time of drinking, eating, dancing, entertainment, and theatre. In order to protect your identity - you would wear masks.

The 'Bauta' was the most traditional and most common type of mask. A half mask it was usually worn with a black cape and hat. It covered the face well, but had no mouth feature and was made in such a way you could eat and drink while wearing it. These masks were usually white.

The 'Punchinella' mask leaves the mouth uncovered.
