Guest Author - Taisha Turner

Travelers to Japan worry about the high cost of food. There are many entrees and desserts which do not destroy the budget. A little planning on the traveler’s part will result in the knowledge and enjoyment of tasty and healthy cheap eats in Japan.

The flan is just one of the cheap eats to be found in Japan. It is an inexpensive dessert for the budget traveler or expatriate. This sweet treat is a tasty end to an impromptu picnic.

A flan is a custard dessert originally from France. Due to globalization the dessert can now be found almost anywhere on the planet. The flan consists of whole eggs, cream, sugar and some type of flavoring. Vanilla is the usual choice, but lemon and cinnamon are common.

The cheap eat forms in a mold. The mold, sitting in a water bath, is placed in a hot oven. The rich custard, when done, is cooled and removed from the mold. The flan is sometimes decorated with fruit and edible flowers.

These cheap eat are available everywhere in Japan. This ubiquitous custard is sold in the neighborhood Lawson or 7-Eleven stores. There are dozens of brands and flavorings on the stores’ shelves. Stop in a store and pick a flan for a treat.
