See a Belly Dance Performance
The love of belly dance and the passion to become a great dancer, comes not only from within, but from watching others. Being around other belly dancers is refreshing and beautiful. To watch other dancers perform is a treat.

For those who are just beginning, take time to schedule a performance where you can see exactly what the future may hold for you. Let this be a learning experience, a time to be inspired, and a reward for you. Besides, you have practiced hard and you deserve to be rewarded!

Belly dance performances are not difficult to find, and for the most part you can catch a performance almost any day of the week. Living in Houston, Texas, almost any Middle Eastern restaurant or dance school has a scheduled belly dance performance. Make sure to call in advance to find out the cost.

While at a performance, watch as how the belly dancer enters the stage. Her smile should greet everyone’s awaiting eyes. Some dancers enter while the music plays, or some dancers wait for someone to introduce her. Other dancers enter with a veil for the first few counts of music.

A dancer may have several choreographed routines during her performance. Also, the dancer may change several times during her performance. The first song should grab the audience’s attention. Show your support by clapping along with the beat.

Pay attention to how she expresses herself. There are some dancers who become seduced by the music, that you somehow believe that piece of music was made just for her. It is a beautiful sight.

There are other dancers who add some comedy to their performance. I saw a belly dancer doing a drum solo. She did hip lifts, chest lifts, shoulder lifts, and yes, eyebrow lifts! It was so cute!

If you are just learning how to belly dance, try to recognize the moves. Which movements were shimmies? Which ones were hip lifts? You will be surprised of how much you know. Should you go with someone to a performance, let them know after the performance your thoughts and tell them some moves you recall. Share this. It is important to your growth.

When at home, write down what you remember about the dancer’s costume, music and movements. Try some of the movements you remember. Why not? Have fun!
