With Christmas just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about a gift for those “hard to buy for” people on our lists. Many people seem to have everything they want and need, which leaves only one good option – a gift certificate of some sort. I like the idea of giving gift certificates, and I would certainly rather receive a gift certificate than some item I have absolutely no use for. There is something impersonal about a gift certificate though, and I’m always stuck wondering what else I could buy that has more meaning and thought behind it.
This year for Christmas, I’m going to give the gift of “computer security” to those “hard to shop for” people who have everything. Everyone I know owns a computer and uses the internet, and most are likely not using up-to-date antivirus software. My friends and relatives are like anyone else who uses the internet; they fail to renew their anti virus or internet security suite subscription and are left unprotected (although they don’t realize it).
Once I do a little investigating to confirm who is and isn’t using current computer security software, I’m going to purchase and install a good internet security suite for all those “hard to buy for” friends and family members who need it. I’m also going to make sure they understand the necessity for a computer security suite, and realize the importance of keeping this software current and up to date.
Why Give an Internet Security Suite?
With all the threats that exist on the internet today, it’s very important to protect ourselves (as well as loved ones) from the hidden dangers of computer viruses, spyware and phishing emails delivered as spam. It’s also important to protect our computers with a good personal firewall, which stops unauthorized inbound and outbound traffic (that could be transmitting personal information to some thief across the world). An internet security suite will provide protection against all these internet security threats.
Most people don’t realize the need for protection against viruses, spyware, phishing scams, and hackers, because nothing bad has happened to them (or their computers) yet. Statistics show that around 80% of computers connected to the internet are not protected against dangerous spyware (which can steal your identity in the blink of an eye), and that 60% are not protected against viruses (which can kill your computer and destroy precious data). Nearly all of the computers I am asked to “fix” are severely infected with spyware, and a large percentage have been corrupted by viruses.
I don’t want my friends and family members falling victim to some cyber-criminal’s efforts to steal their personal information or destroy their data, so I’ll give the gift of a computer security suite to my “hard to buy” for people this Christmas. What better way to say “I love you”, and “I care about you”?
Other Computer Security Gift Ideas
Since a good internet security suite such as Bit Defender Internet Securityis rather expensive (around $80), a good (easy to understand) book on internet security is always a good choice. A couple of good computer security books are Blocking Spam and Spyware for Dummies
