Free, or Nearly Free Holiday Gifts

With the Holidays so near, I thought I would reprise this article from last year, with a couple of new additions, because I think the ideas are helpful, especially in these difficult economic times. There's nothing like a handmade gift, or a gift of all the supplies needed for a fun project.

Most of these ideas require small amounts of fabric and trims which you can easily find in your fabric collection or scrap basket. If your stash is large enough, these gifts require no other expense to make, but the gifts will mean so much because you made it yourself. All of these ideas are articles that you can find right here on the Doll Making Site.

Scrub Suit for 18 Inch Dolls
This is a series of articles to make a scrub top and pair of scrub pants for your doll. This is a great idea for a doll lover who works in health care, or the child of a health care worker. Scrub Suit for 18 Inch Dolls

Dresses for Slender 18 Inch Dolls
This is an easy dress to make for slender 18 inch dolls, such as Magic Attic and similar dolls. The dress requires only .5 yard of fabric and less than a yard of lace trim. Easy Dress for Slender 18 Inch Dolls

Cigar Box Doll Bed
This bed, with a small doll, was one of my most memorable Christmas gifts as a child. The box can usually be had for free and the bedding requires only scraps of fabric. Even the doll costs only about $1 at craft stores. For very little money this makes a gift that will be remembered for a lifetime. Cigar Box Doll Bed

Dresses for 15 Inch Baby Dolls
This dress is perfect for all the doll lovers, young and not so young, that love Bitty Baby. Make it in holiday fabrics, add some ribbon and trims, and Bitty Baby has a lovely new holiday dress.Dress to fit 15 Inch Bitty Baby Dolls

Mini Dolls Pants Outfit
Here is a pattern to make an adorable outfit for a 6 to 8 inch doll. This will fit on Ginny or Betsy McCall dolls, but it is shown on a doll that I bought for about $2 at a large craft supply store. It only takes scraps of fabric from your stash, and even if you buy the little doll, this still makes a very inexpensive, but darling little gift! Mini Dolls Pants Outfit

Make a Stuffed Bear Doll
This doll can be made with holiday print fabrics for a very festive gift. You can add a pretty ballerina skirt made with brightly colored ribbon to dress her up. All the articles about Bear Dolls can be found here Bear Doll Home Page

Make a Stuffed Bunny Doll
This doll would be a welcome addition to any collection. Make it in traditional "bunny" colors, calico prints, or holiday prints; add a festive bow "neck tie."
A soft stuffed bunny is the perfect gift for the smallest ones on your gift list. Bunny Doll Lessons

15 Inch Annie Doll
For the doll body you only need a piece of fabric approximately 20 inches by 24 inches. For the dress you'll need about half a yard of fabric. The hair and face can be done with leftovers as well. Another great gift idea would be to put all the cut fabric, yarn, floss and sewing notions together for a child or doll loving friend you'd like to sew with. The articles can be found here 15 Inch Annie Doll.

Dresses for American Girl type dolls
Here is a pattern and instructions to make a dress for 18 inch dolls. This dress takes less than a yard of fabric and is easy to make. You can find the pattern here American Girl Type Dolls - Spring Dresses.

Make Dolls to Hang on Your Tree
This article has instructions to make handkerchief and corn husk dolls. These little dolls would be perfect on a country style tree or to decorate any doll lover's tree. Find the article here Ornament Dolls.

If you have all the supplies needed to make one of these gifts in your stash, but not a lot of time, you can still give a wonderful gift. Cut all the fabric to the required size, put enough stuffing in a freezer bag, add in any needed thread and trims, print out the pattern and put it all in a pretty box! What doll enthusiast wouldn't love to get such a fun gift? And what a lovely way to start a young doll lover on a lifelong hobby of making dolls and doll clothes!
