Luke and Laura Letdown

Luke and Laura Letdown
I was five when Luke and Laura Spencer were first married. My mother was a CBS soap fan at the time, so even if I had understood what a huge event this wedding was, I would likely not have been able to watch it.

Still, I grew up knowing about this couple and their legendary love. Every daytime wedding has been compared to this one. Every soap couple has been judged against the love of Luke and Laura.

When I started watching GH in the mid-1990's, it was easy to see why everyone loved this couple. They are fun together and they love each other. The chemistry between the characters--and the actors--made their love story so believable.

The Spencer's have survived life on the run, Laura's kidnapping, a Cassadine child, and the supposed death of their eldest son, Lucky. Their love even survived Luke and Laura's divorce. Even the mental breakdown Laura suffered was not enough to stop these two from loving each other.

Since I did not get to see the wedding, I was so looking forward to the 25th anniversary celebration. I expected something amazing and spectacular. What we got, though loving, was not as glorious as it could have been.

I knew that the return of Laura would not be long-term. I would have loved to see her stick around for a while, to get to know her grandson, to help her daughter adjust to the changes in her life, and to support her son in his addiction recovery. Even though I knew that would not happen, I wish it had.

Luke and Laura's second wedding was such a disappointment. I understand the desire Luke had to make every one of Laura’s dream come true, but to allow her to believe their wedding was real and the marriage was legal is almost unforgivable. He went too far with this. Luke and Laura could have celebrated their love and life together in so many ways without the wedding. After all, they did have four years to make up for.

How was Luke able to pull off the wedding, anyway? I still don't get that. Everyone in Port Charles knows he is married to Tracy Quartermaine. Does the population of this town really love Laura so much that they would keep this secret from her? The most unrealistic part was that Helena said nothing. She knows about Luke's marriage, and she lives to torture Luke and Laura both. It was very out of character for her to just let it all happen without saying anything.

I did enjoy Tracy wearing all black and showing up at the wedding drunk. When Tracy tried to stop the wedding, it was priceless! I laughed so hard when Alice picked her up and carried her away from the ceremony. Wonder if she has been let out of that hall closet yet.

It was less than necessary to use this wedding to showcase Maxie's stupidity and obsession with Lucky. Crashing the wedding was both desperate and selfish. Definitely not a way to earn Lucky’s love and affection.

As happy as I was to see Laura back--even for such a brief time--I was really disappointed with the way events unfolded. I wish the powers that be had handled this anniversary differently. I am interested in hearing what other long-time GH fans think of her return. Stop by the forums and voice your opinion.
