US Virgin Islands

Guest Author - Aaron Kirley

Cruise vacations are about a whole lot more than cruise ships, in fact destinations are the driving factor in selecting the perfect cruise vacation. This guild is designed to help you choose whether a United States Virgin Island destination is right for you. The US Virgin Islands are a popular cruise ship destination for a number of reasons as you will soon learn.

The Islands
St. Croix, St. John and St. Thomas are the major islands that make up what is known as the US Virgin Islands. At 86 square miles, St. Croix is the largest island in this group and it offers silk sand white sand beaches, Botanical Gardens and tropical rain forests. St. Croix is also the home of the world famous Cruzan Run Distillary which of course offers a tour which will give you a first hand view of the age old run distillery process. St. Thomas is less than half the size of St. Croix at 32 square miles but it offers excellent shopping, beaches, and dining. St. John has 28 square miles of tropical beauty. Over two thirds of St. John is a US National Park and the island offers white sand beaches, hiking, diving, and Jeep rentals for exploration.

Beaches
Letís be honest, most people think of beaches when they think of the Virgin Islands. There is no shortage of beaches in the US Virgin Islands, St. Croix has three public beaches. Frederiksted Beach is close to the pier if you want to squeeze the beach into a short destination stop. Cane Bay is great for relaxing and diving. Protestant Cay is a nice quite beach with amazing views. St. Thomas has a lot of beaches. Magens Bay is a great family beach with mild waters for young children. Coki Beach is the place to go for Snorkeling and Sapphire Beach has the bars, bands, and bodies. In St. John Cinnamon Bay is known for snorkeling and relaxing. If youíre looking for a more quiet atmosphere you should look into Hawksnest Bay.

Shopping
If youíre not heading to the beach then chances are youíre a shopper. The US Virgin Islands have ATMs in every major town center and offer plenty of ways to spend your cash. Duty free shopping deals abound on the USVI especially if you are shopping for alcohol or jewelry.

Hopefully this quick overview helps you choose your next cruise destination.
