Can Music Affect Your Self Development
The effect of music on self development is very topical. Music has the power to change your mood and affect you in ways that no other tool can. It has profound effects on the human body, not just superficially, but deep down within your subconscious mind. For this reason, yes, it can affect your self development.
Music directly connects with your ‘feelings’. It affects your physiological responses (heart rate, breathing, etc) and brain activity. It stimulates certain emotions and deep memories. Look at how a song or instrumental piece brings joy or tears without you quite understanding why. It touches your emotions in a way that nothing else does. In an instant music can change your mood.
When toddlers hear music they like, even before their language has developed they show their delight by singing along or clapping. Their mood becomes one of sheer joy. Clinicians have found music reduces stress, makes exercise programmes more effective, reduces pain before and after surgery, and helps people with insomnia, cancer, depression, ADD, anxiety, etc.
How it works
It appears that sound can stimulate brainwaves to resonate with the frequencies. Generally speaking, the slower the tempo, the more relaxed your arousal state. When you listen to music at live concerts there is an added dimension. The sound does not just come to you via your ears but through your entire body. Every organ and cell within you resonates in some way.
Research has also shown music to play a significant part in the development of the synaptic connections in cell networks. This, in turn, has positive effects on children’s and adults’ learning abilities. There are many studies that show music to benefit cognitive abilities like reasoning and motor skills. The ‘Mozart effect’ is just one example of the effect of music on intelligence.
It is thought that the complex nature of sound (rhythm, frequencies, etc) touches various levels of the neurological system at the same time, stimulating more creative processing in the brain. This is why many people find it easier to totally focus on a new subject if they have specific music in the background.
Music is used in all areas of life to ‘create a mood’. For example, medical surgeries may play soothing music to relax you, shops and restaurants may play slow-paced music to make you feel at peace and want to stay there longer, fast-food restaurants may play music with a quick beat to get you out faster, phone help-lines may play relaxing tunes to calm you down, and so on. Music is used in all quarters to get you to comply with their wishes.
Music actually affects you in all aspects of your daily life, even down to fast music having the tendency to make you eat and drive faster! However, one person’s music is another person’s noise. Some people feel relaxed to hear the sounds that are played in elevators. Others find this terribly distressing. Some people cringe when they hear ‘music for meditation’. For others it adds another dimension to their meditative practice. Here are just some of the many positive effects music has:
* brings on sleep
* changes moods
* improves memory
* promotes creativity
* accelerates learning
* nurtures self-esteem
* increases self-confidence
* stimulates problem-solving
* increases emotional development
How it affects Self Development
Music is very powerful at affecting your mood state instantly. Consider what music makes you feel happy, sad, anxious, etc. Lyrics add another dimension. If the words are uplifting you are more likely to feel more optimistic about everything.
Once you are aware of how music affects you, this is your personal power. You can deliberately choose to listen to specific pieces depending on what effect you want. Experiment with this. Does slow, dreamy music make you feel more at peace or is it downright irritating. What about music with a faster pace? If you are feeling desperately tired, do certain tunes give you energy? What helps if your thinking is cloudy?
If you find that certain music promotes the beneficial results you want, listen to it whenever you need this outcome. If you feel worse, simply avoid that music. For your own self empowerment, find music that inspires you to achieve what you want to get done.
Then there is the opposite effect when too much stimulation causes your physiological responses to go into overdrive, stress levels increase and all you really want is total quiet. Some people need music in order to concentrate. Others cannot work unless there is total silence. You will find that music can:
* prevent focussing on problems
* turn negativity into positivity
* develop spatial intelligence
* improve concentration
* enhance listening skills
* reduce stress levels
* accelerate learning
* and much more!
Self Development comprises the tools for taking control of your life and working towards your goals and dreams. As you grow and develop using these tools you achieve more success. Music is another great tool to add to your kit.
