Jane Jensen

Guest Author - Kevin Thorburn

Jane Jensen was injected into mainstream pop culture last week with a hit on an old song updated with car horns and smashing glass. Television shows can be a fantastic source of new music. When Kalinda turns on Blake's car in "Cleaning House," an episode of "The Good Wife," many took notice of the song that began playing when she went to work with the baseball bat. When music fits a scene perfectly, the result can be magic.

That song was "Luv Song" and it introduces us to the work of Jane Jensen. Jensen studied music, theatre and audio arts in Chicago and has gone on to record albums, act, and work with video, photography and poetry. Clearly her interests and talents are broad.

Originally released in the mid '90s, "Luv Song" utilizes a strong beat, radio-like effects and catchy, edgy lyrics with Jensen's sharp, piercing voice to deliver a piece that stands out and has retained the ability to impress listeners.

Hardly a one trick pony, Jensen's music releases show off the range of her abilities as a singer. "Angel" maintains that edginess with the song's lyrics, but she tones it down with the vocals and delivers a more controlled performance that emphasises the skills she possesses with that instrument.

Jensen performed with The Dolls and released "I Do" where the rocker chick came out, but her unmistakable sweet-yet-crisp voice remained. Another example of the chameleon ability she administers can be seen and heard with the Lo-Deff Dollz in the song "Alone." As with other videos, a documentary and interview-like approach is used to highlight the story in the lyrics. Of interest in the "Alone" video is the presence of graphic novel style images perhaps portraying another of Jensen's skills and interests.

There is a strength in the lyrics of her songs, the characters in videos, and in Jensen's very voice that is undeniable. Her success in music will only be limited by the amount of effort she wishes to put forth because her talent seems to know no bounds.

With television programs showcasing artists often overlooked by the majority with increasing success, there is no doubt more of these gems can be discovered with some attentive listening to prime time shows. It is a boon to all musicians that this medium is utilising this tool more often. Be alert when you are watching your favourite programs and you should be enjoying the thrill of discovering someone you may not have found through conventional sources.
