Eastern State Penitentiary History
Opening in 1829 it was one of the most expensive American buildings built during its day. It was created with a Quaker-inspired system of punishment, isolation, labor, reflection and change. Prisoners would be hooded whenever they were outside of their cells, so they would not gain knowledge of the building, prevent distraction and even interaction with guards. It was believed that though silence and their thoughts, the prisoners would see insight to their crimes and become genuinely penitent, thus the history and beginning of the word penitentiary.

The design of the first cell blocks is unique, 7 cell blocks like spokes of a wheel, by standing in the center rotunda you could literally turn and see down each cell block. Each cell had running water, central heat, a flushing toilet and a skylight, even Andrew Jackson’s White House had no running water and had only coal heating.

The prisoners day, consisted of only the light from the heaven (skylight) a Bible and honest work (shoemaking, weaving, etc...) all leading to penitence.

One of the more famous prisoners staying at Eastern State Penitentiary was Al Capone

1965 Eastern State Penitentiary is designated at a National Historical Landmark by the Federal Goverment.

In January 1970 Eastern State Penitentiary was closed.

In 1994, Eastern State Penitentiary was opened for public tours.

Other paranormal investigative teams that have been to Eastern State Penitentiary have been TAPS (The Atlantic Paranormal Society) who show airs on the SCIFI Channel.
