The 34th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards ceremony was held on Friday, June 15, 2007. For the second year in a row, the ceremony was held in Hollywood’s Kodak Theater. This year, the ceremony was televised on CBS. Congratulations are in order for two General Hospital stars. Both won in the Supporting categories.
Congrats to Genie Francis, who plays Laura Spencer on General Hospital. Genie has played this role on and off since 1976. She was first nominated for an Emmy award for her work as Laura in May 1997. Her most recent stint as Laura came in November 2006 and earned her a second Emmy nomination. This time, Genie was able to take home the Statuette for Outstanding Supporting Actress, beating out Lesli Kay of the Bold and the Beautiful, Gina Tognoni of Guiding Light, Renee Elise Goldsberry and Heather Tom of One Life to Live, and her on-air daughter-in-law Rebecca Herbst. Genie’s appearance on the ballot was seen as controversial to many, as she worked only 4 weeks during the eligibility period. Genie was surprised by the win. SoapCentral.com quoted Genie after her win as saying, "Who would have thought that a little four-week visit after I had really wrapped up there... that that would produce an Emmy after years and years of working year-round." Rumors abound that Genie will reprise her Emmy-winning role in the near future. If this happens, General Hospital fans can look forward to many more stellar scenes.
Congratulations also go out to Rick Hearst, who plays less than trustworthy District Attorney Ric Lansing. This year’s win was the third for Rick. His first win was s Outstanding Younger Actor in 1991, for his role on Guiding Light. In 2004, he won as Outstanding Supporting Actor for playing Ric Lansing. This year, Rick beat out Trent Dawson of As the World Turns, Dan Guathier of One Life to Live, and Greg Rikkart and Kristoff St. John of The Young and The Restless. Recent throat surgery kept Rick off the screen for a few days, but he has returned to work. Well done, Rick. Keep up the good work. There is no one on ABC daytime I love hate more than you!
