Joining a Gaming Club

Guest Author - Lynn Little

Joining a gaming club can be a fun way to meet new people who enjoy the same games that you do. You will be with folks with have a common interest - plus you can play more of your favorite games.

You can find that many board game groups have their own centralized hub on the Internet. Searching Yahoo! or MSN groups for clubs in your area can be a good start. Also websites like Meetup.com allow you to find groups in your area. With Meetup, you can also find other people interesting in joining a group should you find that there isn't a group in your area. Also, the website Boardgamegeek.com is a tremendous community of board gamers from around the world. While there is really no official game club listings, it can be a fun way to find gamers in your area. There is also a listing of board game clubs right here at BellaOnline board games.

Playing games with new people can be stressful at first. You will be coming into a possibly established group that knows each other very well. You will want to make a good impression and fit in. The best advice is to be yourself. Trying too hard can come off as impersonal or that you have an ulterior motive. Just enjoy the game. If the group plays certain games on certain nights, try to attend on a night where the games really don't require you to know the people personally. Hopefully the group will have a nice ice breaker game at the beginning of each session to give new people a chance to introduce themselves.

When people get together, it is natural to bring snacks. Bring enough to share and something not too messy since board games will be on tables. This will help to keep the games as clean as possible when someone grabs a snack during a game. Potato chips can be greasy and not a great choice. Cheese and crackers or even cookies would be a great snack to bring to your first game.

Once that first meeting is out of the way, you will know the people in the group better. You can really get to know people by playing board games since it's a very relaxing hobby for most, so they are more comfortable and talk more. Joining a gaming group is a fun way to enjoy those games we never seem to have time to play. Being part of a group will help you play more games and meet new people.
