Hurricane Season 2007 Update
While hurricane season 2007 doesn't officially end until November 30th here is a wrap up of what has happened with the season to date.
The first storm of 2007 was on May 9th and it was subtropical storm Andrea. This was only the second time that a storm formed before the June 1st hurricane season official start date. In April of 2003 was the other time this happened.
Tropical storm Barry made landfall near Tampa Bay, Florida on June 2nd. August 16th Hurricane Dean became the first official hurricane of the 2007 hurricane season. Dean became a category 5 storm on August 20th and made landfall on August 21st on the Yucatan Penisula of Mexico. Tropical storm Erin was classified as a tropical storm on August 15th and made landfall in Texas on August 16.
Hurricane Felix was next and the storm set records when it hit category 5 status making 2007 one of only four hurricane seasons on record with more than one category 5 storm. Hurricane Dean was the first category 5 storm of the 2007 season. Hurricane Felix made landfall on September 4th in Nicaragua. At least 21 people were killed in the storm and many homes were destroyed with Felix making landfall with up to 160 mph winds.
Tropical Storm Gabrielle was classified as a tropical storm on September 8th. Gabrielle passed over the Outer banks of North Carolina on September 10th and was re-classified as a depression. Tropical Storm Ingrid was classified on September 14th but was weakened by shearing winds and was the first storm of 2007 to not cause damage or threaten land.
Hurricane Humberto was classified as a category 1 hurricane on September 13th and made landfall in Texas as a category 1 on the same day. Humberto was the fastest forming storm on record making landfall within 18 hours of forming. Humberto caused wide spread power and tree damage and some structural damage. Humberto also caused oil production to be stopped when the power was lost in the areas of the oil refineries.
