Seduction's Spell
Bad Girl (Berkley Heat) by Maya Reynolds is up first. Sandy Davis is a voyeur. She didn't intend to be one, but now that she's started watching the people in the neighboring buildings in their most intimate moments, she can't stop. Except for someone calling himself Justice, and he knows what she's been doing. Zeke Prada accidentally caught Sandy peeping while he's been on a stake-out, and he's both attracted to her and worried that his suspect is going to catch her at it. He didn't intend to actually get involved with her, just to frighten her into stopping. You all know about those best laid-plans, pun intended. Zeke and Sandy embark on a whirlwind, steaming hot affair, but his suspect gets into the picture, too, in a big way, and now Sandy's life is in danger. Zeke to the rescue, right? There's nothing here that will surprise you, no fantastic plot twists, or really different characters to hook you in. This one is pretty standard erotic romance, although Sandy makes some choices here that will likely make any thinking reader wonder how she could be so stupid. Several times in the reading of this one, I wondered just that. It's pleasant enough otherwise, but not a keeper. It's earned only three of Cupid's five arrows.
Seduction's Spell (Avon Red) by Lynn LaFleur is next, with her collection of related stories set in Belle on the Bend, an old southern mansion with some special secrets, including the hostess Belle Patricelli. Her first guests are Maggie and Isaac Olvera, on a week's vacation and not at all happy. Maggie wants some of the attention Isaac's been lavishing on his business for years, and Isaac is too busy to notice. Until the inn's handyman pays a tiny bit of attention to her. Supermodel Yvonne Lowe needs a break from her hectic life. She'd also like a man who can satisfy her, but that's never happened. At least not till she meets that very same handyman, Dolan. Then things take a turn for the better. Temporarily anyway. Vince Wagner has been plotting with his former mother-in-law to get his wife Sara back, and this is his chance, once he has her at Belle on the Bend. But Sara can't quite believe he still loves her, especially since she's never quite believed a man like him could love her in the first place. And Belle can't resist the sexy writer Mitch Cavanaugh when he comes to write about her inn, but sharing her deepest secret is sure to drive him away. The best thing I can say about this one is that it's a true erotic romance unlike much of what is being marketed that way these days. There's very little conflict in these stories, and the sex isn't even all that hot compared to some other books. Heck, I've read books recently that weren't billed as erotic romances that were hotter than this one. On the other hand, if you're just looking for something really uncomplicated to pass the time, this might just be the thing. But it's not a keeper for me. It's earned only two arrows.
Until next time, happy reading!
