Garden Activities for Fall

Garden Activities for Fall
Fall is finally here, bringing a new season to the garden. With cooler temperatures on the way, this is an excellent opportunity to spruce up the landscape.

For many areas of the country, this is the preferred time for planting for trees, shrubs, and hardy perennials. Fall plantings generally do very well. Just be sure to do this early enough so that the plants get a good start before the onset of winter. In those regions with lingering drought, it is probably best to wait until spring to plant.

This is also the traditional time to clean up the garden. Fall clean-up will give you a head start on spring. Before you start pulling up spent annuals and cutting perennials back, make some notes what you liked and didn’t like about the garden this year, which plant combinations worked best, and so on. These notes will come in handy when it is time to plan next year’s garden.

Once the bulbs are planted and the garden is cleaned up, get those garden records in order before the holidays arrive.

When it comes to keeping garden records, there are many systems you can use. Whatever your preference, Galison offers many options. For the fall, they’ve added a number of new items that will appeal to gardeners. The new wire bound List Journals with elastic enclosures have 140 lined pages for making notes and lists, while the 40 graph pages are perfect for making garden sketches. These indispensable journals are available in four designs, including the delectable Van Gogh Blossoms, the memorable Monet Waterlilies, and the exquisite William Morris Clover.

In addition to these journals, Galison has cloth journals that would be suitable for garden notes. These journals have 128 lined pages and are gorgeously bound with Japanese linen. They’re available in four gardening themes, including two shades of Zinnia Garden as well as the lovely Art Nouveau Poppies and the Bamboo Garden.

For those who have loose gardening notes lying around, organize these easily with Galison’s accordion organizers with elastic enclosures. These are available in two different sizes and various garden-related themes, including William Morris Lily. They come with their own lined notepads, six accordion dividers, and elastic pencil holder.

To help you get your gardening notes and clippings filed away once and for all, you can’t beat Galison’s line of File Totes. These elegant, roomy, expandable filing systems with eight dividers are beautiful enough to leave on a desk or tabletop. With an elastic enclosure, these come with a sheet of 16 coordinating labels. Gardeners will especially like the William Morris Clover File Tote and the Meadowsweet File Tote. Matching file folders are available for these designs.

There are also other options when it comes to filing loose garden notes. For that reason, I especially recommend Galison’s new line of collectible, full color Note Tins with see-through lids. Each tin contains 12 generously sized cards with two designs and 13 color-coordinated envelopes. After you send the cards, use the tins for storing garden notes. This new series includes the lovely Mandarin Blossom and the William Morris Flower Garden.

Galison is well known for its beautiful line of Keep-It Boxes with magnetic lids. As with the Note Tins, these boxes can be used for storing garden notes and the like once you’ve used all the cards. For fall, Galison has added several new garden-related Keep-It Boxes. These include Nature’s Cabinet Tableaux de Fleurs with 20 note cards, four of each subject and 21 envelopes. These feature art from the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation. Among the other garden Keep-It Boxes is the Van Gogh Sunflowers and the Monet Waterlilies.
