Thoughts on Halloween for the Belly Dancer

Thoughts on Halloween for the Belly Dancer
Whatever you do, please don't touch that belly dance outfit. Think outside the box. I know it seems easy for us to be a belly dancer for Halloween, but the fact is, we should dress as something different. We are already belly dancers, so pick another costume.

Several weeks before Halloween, I was talking to my co-worker. We decided to dress sexy for the upcoming Halloween parties. As we were talking, another co-worker told me, "Whatever you do, don't dress up as a belly dancer". I told him that I didn't plan to. He then explained that it is not wise to dress as someone you already are, because most people know that I belly dance.

Yesterday, I saw "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown", and one of the most memorable lines was when Lucy explained to the others the importance of dressing in a costume that was in contrast to their personalities. She told everyone, "A person should always choose a cosutme which is in direct contrast to her own personality". Of course, we all know that she dresses up as a witch, something that contradicts her statement. Nevertheless, What Lucy said, is good advice.

Thinking outside the box, I feel that we already have an advantage as belly dancers when it comes to selecting a costume. Belly dance costumes are inspired from countries all over the world. Simply put, we have some knowledge about what the everyday woman looked like once upon a time. For instance, Egypt inspired many of the movements we use today. Dressing like an Egyptian woman is a great costume choice.

Greece is another country to look at for ideas. There are numerous Greek goddesses that can inspire your Halloween look. You don't have to go very far to grab a costume, for most stores have the whole package put together. shoes and other accessories for the costume are usually not sold with it.

Gypsy and tribal dancers can dress as other similar groups. There are numerous nomadic tribes that have made their mark on earth long before modern man. Take a look at their clothing and put something together. Visit India. They too have several tribal groups that dress in breathtaking colors.

For those women who are just starting to take a few belly dance classes here and there, I would recommend you dress in a belly dance costume. It should come to no surprise to you why I say this. First, I believe that Halloween is the perfect time to get a feel of what it is like to dress up, plus it is safe. Second, if you are happy at the end of the day and like how you felt, then I'm most certain you will continue onward with your journey as a dancer.

A word to the others who bought a belly dance costume, but do not intend to be a belly dancer, please do not act as strippers. The costume should not give you permission to behave foolishly. Yes, do have fun, but don't over do it.

Enjoy your tricks and treats, ladies!
