Book Review - Decorating Fabric
“Decorating Fabric – Print, Stencil, Paint and Dye 100 Inspirational Projects” was written by Susie Stokoe and published in 2001 by Lorenz Books.

Looking for floorcloth painting ideas? Fabric dyeing techniques? A new pattern for a sewn rug? This book is filled with 100 projects complete with step by step instructions and hundreds of pictures explaining different fabric painting and dyeing techniques.

The chapter of Printing and Stenciling includes:
Information about Materials and Equipment; paints, fabrics, brushes, rollers….
Ideas for designing with stamps.
Instructions for making a stencil and how to create different effects using stencils; stippling, dry brush…
Project instructions for using blocks of wood, rubber stamps, foam stamps, stamps made from potatoes, apples and pears, sponges, feathers, leaves, foam rubber, linoleum, upholstery foam, Indian textile-printing border block and Mylar stencils to create patterns and designs.

The Chapter on Fabric Painting includes:
Information about Materials and Equipment; paints, varnishes, brushes…
and projects instructions for painting designs on fabrics using paint brushes, sponges and fabric paint pens.

Other Chapters in this book include instructions and projects for Painting on Silk, Batik and Space-Dyeing.

There are two Floorcloth Patterns and a Sewn Rug Pattern:
Stars-And-Stripes Floorcloth
The Stars-And-Stripes Floorcloth is made from an artist canvas. Instructions include hemming, priming, and painting the design using stencils, masking tape and acrylic paints. The floorcloth is finished with varnish.

Vinegar-Glazed Floorcloth
The Vinegar-glazed floorcloth is made from heavyweight cotton duck canvas, coloured vinegar-glaze and varnish. Instructions include stretching and hemming the canvas, painting the border and centre panel, creating the designs using reusable tacky adhesive and corks, and finishing with varnish.

Teddy Bear Rug
A 36” (90cm) Space-Dyed Wool/Viscose Felt Rug with appliquéd teddy bears, finished with space-dyed fringe. Instructions include recipes and instructions for dyeing the fabrics, template for cutting out the teddy bears and sewing instructions.

A few examples of other projects in this book, include Book Covers, Greeting Cards, Lampshades, Curtains, Screens, Scarves, Shower Curtains and Tablecloths.
