Eating before your Performance
When that moment comes for you to perform, you are more likely to be nervous. All the practice, long hours of perfecting your routine, and finally, it is time! Nevertheless, one thing that should never be ignored, is an empty tummy.
Who isn't nervous before a performance? Even the pros are a bit nervous when they take stage. We never perform at the same place, so the audience is always a change. The stage itselfis never the same. Nerves are a given.
It is no surprise when it comes to the munchies. Dancers have dealt with the hunger pain different ways. Of course, you probably have your own way of handling hunger before your performance. There are some things to keep in mind.
1. Know your body type. This is the number one thing to always remember. Our bodies are not the same. Some of us burn more calories, while others, like myself deal with a poor thyroid, so the battle to turn food into energy is a tough task. You may have already figured out what works best for you. If eating lightly before a belly dance practice helps, then this is what your body needs all the time. You also know how your body reacts to certain types of foods. For some, pasta gives energy, whereas others, it has a negative impact.
2. Diet well. Some of us dancers like to lose a couple of pounds before a performance. That is alright as long as you know how to do it the right way. Don't do a crash diet and think you are going to be ready come performance time. Big mistake! What you want to do is be on the right track. When you don't eat, you hurt your memory skills, and dancers have to remember the choreography. You will be vulnerable to many mistakes on the stage when you actually perform.
3. Take good snacks with you on the day of your performance. I think by now you figured out the message: no heavy meal and no empty stomach. What you can do is pack some apples, crackers, or a healthy muffin, with a couple of bottled waters. Place your snacks in separate bags and take small bites from each. Besides, after when all is said and done, you can reward yourself with a yummy meal.
4. Avoid the bad foods. I have seen dancers snack on a bag of chips and a soda. Not good. It may look like a small snack, but in fact, all the stuff in it will weigh you down. Soda has sugar that will do harm to your muscle. Chips have sodium that can make you feel bloated. Some chocolate is alright, but you only benefit just a little.
