May 3rd is Free Comic Book Day
Guest Author - Jace Shoemaker-Galloway

This special day, “Save the Date”, is an annual event that brings worldwide attention to those colorful superheroes and non-living legends we have grown to love.

Whether you are a comic book aficionado or a brand new fan, what could be better than curling up with a captivating and entertaining comic book?

For decades, comic books have sparked our imaginations and transported us back in time or catapulted us to the future. From beloved classics like Superman and Batman, to X-Men and Transformers, these colorful action heroes are able to come to life on paper and in our minds and hearts.

Joe Field, comic book retailer, came up with the idea years ago and the rest, as they say, is history. Since 2002, comic book publishers have been creating special editions made specifically for FCBD. The annual occasion is coordinated by numerous organizations including publishers, suppliers, retailers, and Diamond Comic Distributors. Many libraries also are involved in the annual event. It is estimated that over 2 million comic books are given away on Free Comic Book Day.

The comics are divided into two categories; Gold Books, which all participating stores will carry, and Silver Books, which will vary from retailer-to-retailer. Depending on the retailer, stores may give away one free issue per customer, or several. Some retailers may also give away older comic books as well. Some of the free comic book titles include:

Archie’s Pal Jughead FCBD 2008 Edition
All Star Superman #1 FCBD 2008 Edition
Transformers Animated FCBD 2008 Edition
X-Men FCBD 2008 Edition
Sonic the Hedgehog #1 FCBD 2008 Edition
Tiny Titans #1 FCBD 2008 Edition
Nascar Heros-All Stars Special FCBD 2008 Edition

Some retailers will be giving away other free products, including Star Wars Miniatures figures or the 2008 Edition of Heroclix Ironman Figure.

To find a participating retailer in your area, visit the Free Comic Book Day website. The site has a variety of up-to-date information, free downloads and includes a comic book store locator.

Candy or Medicine is offering a special eight-page edition in person or as a free download.

Comic books provide non-stop entertainment for young and old alike. Mark your calendar. Hurry, while supplies last.
