As I always say, coffee makes the world go ‘round. This is evident in the extent of news stories that surface daily around coffee.

As seen in the London and Canadian Press, one of the items before the Ontario legislature is deciding as to whether it’s Members of Provincial Parliament should be allowed to have coffee instead of just water while inside. Okay, maybe it was a slow day? We can only hope.

The Coffee Board of Kenya is looking to compliment their current selling methods of specialty coffee by moving to online sales. Up to now they have been sold through auction and direct sales.

While 10,000 bags of coffee were sold through auction, with the addition of direct sales they experienced a 100 percent jump to 20,000. With the implementation of the plan for online sales opening up to the international market all I can say is Kenya—are you ready?

Interesting coffee news about Tim Horton’s, a Canadian coffee chain, for those interested in the stock market. What got my interest though was the author’s (Jason Ramage) use of coffee and food related analogies like “meat of this sandwich left a bit to be desired” and “While this first quarter didn't brew up to full-year targets”. I generally find stock-related articles sleep-inducing but I found myself looking forward to Mr. Ramage’s next run of descriptive text. Okay, maybe it’s just me.

Caribou Coffee, the second largest operator of gourmet coffeehouses in North America, in an effort to improve the standard of living for Ethiopian coffee farmers, agreed to brand Ethiopian regional coffees. With the goal of getting a fair share of the return to those that deserve it most--the farmers, we certainly hope for this effort to be successful.

You really can find coffee news everywhere. In this article entitled, “Dr. Jane Goodall Finds Common Ground for Chimps and Coffee”, it seems that the Jane Goodall Institute and Green Mountain Coffee are working with farmers near the park to restore the forest as opposed to clearing it away for agricultural use. As a result the Tanzanian Gombe Reserve coffee is the first product in the world to carry Dr. Goodall's "Good for All" seal of approval.

I benefited most from this story because I had Dr. Goodall confused with Dian Fossey who was killed while pursuing an in-depth up close and personal study on the life of the Gorilla (her story was portrayed in the movie, “Gorillas in the Mist.”). Turns out Dr. Goodall is alive and well and continuing her work with not only primates but finding ways that man can co-exist with nature without destroying.
