Staying healthy in the heat


1. Drink plenty of water to hydrate your body. Drink juice and milk to restore potassium levels. Drink Gatorade to restore electrolytes and salts within your body. Consume a healthy amount of sodium in your diet. Avoid caffeine as it dehydrates the body.

2. Eat small meals frequently throughout the day. Meals consisting of protein, vegetables and fruit will give you energy and help you to feel good.

3. Avoid strenuous exercise outdoors.

4. Spend time inside where there is air conditioning.

5. Wear sunscreen when you will be outdoors, and it is also helpful to wear light colored protective clothing to shield your skin from the sun. Remember the skin is the largest organ of the body and needs protection.

6. Wear light weight clothing.

7. Slow down when there is extreme heat. Understand that heat causes pressure to weigh heavily on human beings. This naturally slows us down. Understanding this fact and working along with it can make things easier on you during the day if you slow down and rest often.

8. It is especially important for children, infants, the elderly, the overweight, and those who are in fragile health to take things slowly on hot days and avoid heat.

9. If you feel sick because of heat it is important to go into the shade or go indoors. Rest or take a nap. Drink fluids. Take a cool shower. Immerse your body in cool water any way you can to help your body cool down.

10. If you continue to feel sick or have a high temperature, rest in a cool shady area. See your doctor or call 911 for help from emergency medical personnel. Heat stoke can cause serious illness and even death. It occurs when extreme heat causes a body to overheat leaving it unable to cool down. Symptoms of heat stroke are high body temperature, red skin, dizziness, nausea, confusion, unconsciousness.
