A Highlander Never Surrenders

Guest Author - Elizabeth Darrach

Hello, and welcome back! It appears that summer is definitely on the wane here in our area, with beautiful weather in the offing for this week. I can hardly wait for fall's arrival. I've dug hard into the September books already, but I do still have one last August romance to share with you.

A Highlander Never Surrenders (Grand Central) by Paula Quinn is in stores now. Claire Stuart has to save her sister from an arranged marriage. She just has to reach her, and to do that, she must evade unfriendly Scots and Roundheads bent on destroying the Scottish will for independence. Graham Grant is unwilling to let her go alone, despite her obvious skills with a sword. Not only is it unsafe for a woman, no matter how unladylike she may be, to travel alone during this time of war, Claire's family could be in more danger than she knows. Not to mention Graham's attraction to this unconventional miss. Of course, he can't really have her, but he can have a taste or two along the way. But when her intended groom and her sister fall in love, there's no real reason Graham can't woo her himself. Except that Claire still believes that there is something else going on with the General's machinations regarding her and her sister since their brother's death. Claire is an interesting heroine, devoted to her family and determined to defend them in her late brother's place, but she has a tendency to leap before she looks, not just once but again and again. Graham tries to do the right thing, but when Cupid hits a man with his arrow, even a braw Scotsman can't resist the need to claim his woman forever, and damn the consequences. I liked Graham quite a lot, but I can't say that I feel the same way about Claire. On the other hand, Graham as a hero makes up for a lot. He's passionate and stubborn, sexy and determined. Claire's lack of common sense was a tad annoying, but I think fans of Scottish romances may be willing to overlook her issues since there's Graham to make them fall in love. This one has earned three of Cupid's five arrows.

Until next time, happy reading!
