Gift Ideas for Cacti/Succulent Gardens

Guest Author - Connie Krochmal

For gardeners with outdoor cacti and succulent gardens, all sorts of outdoors-related gardening gifts are suitable for those on your holiday shopping list.

For that creative gardener, choose an assortment of Patio Paints from craft stores, such as AC Moore and Michaels. These durable, nontoxic, outdoor paints are a great way to dress up plain terra cotta pots. By the way, theyíre also recommended for wood as well.

These paints come in a wide range of colors. They offer outdoor gardeners an easy way to dress up their collection of cacti and succulent pots. Patio Paints can also be used for concrete tubs and troughs as well.

Those who grow cacti and succulents outdoors always need more pots and planters. For gifts, choose sturdy long lasting materials. Wood and ceramic pots last for years. So does terra cotta. Plastic doesnít hold up as well.

When buying terra cotta or ceramic pots, check the label to be sure it is weatherproof. Otherwise, it could crack and freeze during the winter. This is especially true for most untreated terra cotta.

Traditional strawberry jars made from terra cotta are ideal for outdoor cacti and succulent gardeners. Donít buy the plastic ones. These just arenít as good.

For growing moss rose and other annual succulents, consider giving well-crafted hay rack planters and wrought iron hanging baskets as gifts. These usually come with coco liners. If not, buy these separately.

For those with small gardeners, consider giving high quality topiary frames. These double-decker style planters allow gardeners to grow two types of plants in the same container. These topiary frames come in a range of sizes, including ones for ten inch to 20 inch wide pots.

Kalanchoes or other upright succulents can be grown in the top of the wire container, while sprigs of moss rose or cascading varieties can be tucked in around the base of the frame. Be sure and include a moss or coco liner for the top portion of the planter.
