Filming Maryland Book Review

Filming Maryland Book Review

Filming Maryland is about filmmaking history in Maryland. Published by the Maryland Historical Society, the book chronicles both the history of film and filming in Maryland, and provides a selected array (or filmography) of films to view at your leisure. New York and Los Angeles are not the only notable cities on the big screen. Baltimore and Annapolis are among other popular cities you'll find, and they're both in the midatlantic.

Filming Maryland gives homage to two of Baltimore’s most notable filmmakers: Barry Levinson and John Waters. In excerpts from selected publications, the two filmmakers had this to say about Baltimore:

“Baltimore is my homeland. It’s like no other city in the country and it is exactly like every town throughout the world.”
--Barry Levinson, New York Times

“I would never want to live anywhere but Baltimore. You can look far and wide, but you’ll never discover a stranger city with such extreme style. It’s as if every eccentric in the South decided to move north, ran out gas in Baltimore, and decided to stay.”
--John Waters, Shock Value: A Tasteful Book About Bad Taste

Excerpts and quotes like these from famous filmmakers are found all throughout Filming Maryland. However, the book is not just about directors. Film buffs with an interest in wardrobe, location scouting, and production design will enjoy the book's coverage of these topics as well. In fact, Filming Maryland provides a good study of the business of filmmaking while addressing its focus on Maryland.

Filming Maryland has an excellent filmography. It includes some films made as far back as the early 1900s. Other films include favorites of today. So, whether you’re a film buff, a history buff, or Maryland lover, there's surely a film on the list to pique your interest. Hairspray, Die Hard, Sleepless in Seattle, Broadcast News, and Liberty Heights are just a few.

Books like these are an excellent companion to a DVD or video collection and are helpful for planning what to watch on a relaxing evening. Take it with you when browsing through the aisles of your local video store or as you peruse your online carrier selection.
