Do you think of hair dyeing and nail polish as body art? Most people don't and yet they are direct relatives of tattooing if you really think about it. Wearing a corset can also be considered body art. It's about people making themselves look the way they wish, making conscious decisions about presenting themselves in their daily life. Body art takes many forms, some as transient as a hair cut or color, some as enduring as permanent jewelry piercings or brandings that take months to heal.
