Packing Heat

Guest Author - Elizabeth Darrach

Hello, and welcome back! We're heading into a long holiday weekend here, but all that means for me besides my regular work schedule is extra cooking one day. I might even get to play in the front garden between cooking tasks on Sunday, but I'm not counting on it. And I'd really rather be inside reading if it's not too warm. The stack on my desk is getting rather impressive this month, and I'm quite enjoying some of the new romances.

This time out, I have Penny McCall's latest, Packing Heat (Berkley). FBI agent Harmony Swift has come to the federal prison in Pennsylvania to get Cole Hackett out to assist her on her current case. But Cole isn't inclined to be helpful, not after the FBI set him up eight years ago and left him to rot in prison, though he's rather intrigued by FBI Barbie, as he calls her; after all she's seriously hot, even more so to a man who's been locked up for eight years. The other big problem is, Harmony isn't exactly working on an assigned case; rather, she's on a personal mission that could cost her her job, if she doesn't get killed along the way. Her determination to save another agent who's like family to her is admirable, though Cole knows almost instantly that she's not being completely honest with him. But Cole and Harmony share a smoking hot attraction from the very first, and Cole can't seem to walk away from her, despite the people after them almost from the start, including state police, some rather inept FBI agents, and a pair of Russian mobsters. With Penny McCall, you're guaranteed some serious chemistry between characters, along with adventure and a fair amount of light-hearted moments. Neither of these two can put full trust in the other, despite the emotions growing between them, and that's part of the fun of this story. Since the first, I've been a big fan of Ms. McCall, and the only problem I have with this one is how long it's been since her last book, and how long will it be until the next? Cole is a great hero, sexy and conflicted, and Harmony is a woman who can take care of herself, but how can she resist Cole? This one's earned four of Cupid's five arrows. It's a keeper, naturally.

Until next time, happy reading!
